Prince Harry security questions shadow UK trip plans

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare for a rare family visit to the United Kingdom next week, questions about whether their children will receive “appropriate and proportionate” protective security are resurfacing. The couple’s spokesman says the focus is

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped into a warm welcome at Sydney Harbor, greeted by fans as they prepared to board a boat tour with Invictus Australia. The moment looked celebratory. But the day’s cheer doesn’t erase the tension back home.

Prince Harry is expected to land in the United Kingdom next week. and questions about security arrangements for his young family continue to circle as the trip approaches. There is particular interest in where the family will stay, with King Charles offering the couple an unnamed royal residence. Yet Harry’s spokesman pushed back on the idea that lodging is the central issue.

“The issue has never been accommodation,” the spokesman said June 29. “The issue is whether appropriate and proportionate protective security is being provided throughout the entirety of the visit.”

Harry, 41, and his wife Meghan, 44, are still hoping to bring their children Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, back to Britain. They have not visited together since 2022. Harry has repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of his loved ones. telling the BBC last year. “I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point.”.

A royal residence would come with royal security, but Harry’s spokesman made clear that security is not reducible to a single location. “Safe accommodation is only one element of an effective protective security plan because risk follows the person, not the place,” he said.

Those words land in a context that has long unsettled the public debate about what Harry and his family should be entitled to. Harry’s security was downgraded in 2020 after he and Meghan stepped away from their roles as working royals and left British soil to build a home in the United States. The move angered some and drew admiration from others. and it also muddied the question of whether the king’s youngest son still merits stringent royal security.

In the current round of uncertainty, the spokesman said Monday that an assessment by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, or Ravec, which determines security provisions for senior royals and other public figures, has not yet taken place.

Last year, the duke lost an appeal in a U.K. court over the levels of security he and his family are entitled to while spending time in Britain. “The Duke continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the U.K. ” his spokesman said.

The trip will be the first time the Sussex family has visited Harry’s home country in four years. In June 2022, the family of four joined a celebration marking Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign. Meghan has not been back to Britain since September 2022, for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Harry has made solo trips back to England, but he has not seen his father since September.

This time, Harry’s July visit is expected to combine private and public engagements across the country, according to his representative.

  1. Sounds like they’re making it complicated on purpose. If the King offers a house then why isn’t that enough? People act like everywhere is a target, like come on.

  2. “Risk follows the person, not the place” okay but where are the kids gonna go though? Like if he says it’s never accommodation, then why is everyone talking about where they’ll stay. Feels like a PR loop. Also Invictus tour = no problem in Sydney but UK suddenly is?

  3. I don’t get it, Charles literally offers them a residence and they still “push back.” Like are they mad the security isn’t on like some exact level? Meanwhile Archie and Lilibet are just kids, so idk… seems like everybody arguing about politics instead of safety.
