Patrick Dempsey’s curly early photos reshape his “heartthrob”

Long before Patrick Dempsey became a staple of “heartthrob” talk, he looked nothing like the salt-and-pepper heartthrob many fans know. Years earlier, as a teenager in early roles—including Fast Times at Ridgemont High’s spin-off, Fast Times—his curly hair and
Patrick Dempsey’s early photos don’t match the version of him fans keep in their heads.
In the years before he became synonymous with salt-and-pepper hair and chiseled good looks, there he is as a teenager: a curly mop of hair, a different kind of charm, and an almost unfamiliar face—captured in pictures from the start of his career.
The transformation starts with roles that came before his heartthrob era. Dempsey was only 16 years old when he played Mike Damone in the Fast Times at Ridgemont High spin-off, Fast Times. From that short-lived moment. he went on to star in the teen romantic comedy Can’t Buy Me Love and played a nerdy outcast trying to be a cool kid. He also stepped into the role of a hunky teenager with a passion for older women in In the Mood. and the following year he once again played a cougar in the 1989 flick Loverboy.
Even the timeline of his looks feels like a career beat. A portrait from 1985 shows him posed in a way that’s clearly a different chapter from the later image fans associate with him. And while his career dipped in the 1990s. it came roaring back a decade later—first with Sweet Home Alabama alongside Reese Witherspoon. and then when Grey’s Anatomy hit screens in 2005.
By then, Dempsey had become a cultural shorthand for romantic leading-man appeal. In 2023, he accepted the People’s Sexiest Man Alive award—something he described as unexpected. He said he was “completely shocked” and initially thought it was a joke, quipping, “I’ve always been the bridesmaid.”
When he did talk about what the recognition meant, he framed it as something he could actually use. “I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life,” he told the outlet as their cover star. “It’s nice to have the recognition. and certainly my ego takes a little bump. but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”.
Long before the award and the medical drama spotlight. the roles were already pointing to the range that came later—boyish charm as a teenager. then leading-man energy. then a more defined public image. The difference is that the early photos make the shift feel sudden. They remind you there was a whole runway before the spotlight found its shape.
That “before” extends beyond his on-screen persona. Away from his career. Patrick Dempsey is a devoted family man who shares his three children—Talula. 24. and 19-year-old twins Sullivan and Darby—with his makeup artist wife. Jillian. He’s admitted raising his offspring in Hollywood was “very challenging. ” but he and Jillian have kept “a good. calm. loving. safe environment for them.”.
He also described what those children are like now. Their kids are very “disciplined. ” and they “want to have their own identity. ” something he said they’ve shown by taking very different paths. Talula studied at the famed culinary school Le Cordon Bleu and is now a pastry chef. launching her own business. Talula’s Kitchen.
Darby and Sullivan graduated from the prestigious Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica, California, in May 2025. Darby is currently studying at the University of California, San Diego. Sullivan now lives in New York City. where he attends New York University Tisch School of the Arts and also studies acting at the renowned Stella Adler Studio of Acting.
The public moments still come—like family photos and appearances—but the thread remains the same: a life built around support rather than spectacle. Photos show Patrick Dempsey with his wife Jillian and daughter at Wimbledon. and his family at major events such as the CHANEL and Charles Finch Pre-Oscar Awards Dinner at The Polo Lounge on March 01. 2025 in Beverly Hills. California. There are also scenes of the Dempsey family together at the Los Angeles Premiere of Neon’s “Ferrari” at Directors Guild Of America on December 12. 2023 in Los Angeles. California.
Dempsey left Grey’s Anatomy in 2015, but made a brief cameo in 2021. Still, it’s the contrast—the recognizable heartthrob face today against the curly, younger Dempsey years ago—that sticks hardest. Those early images don’t just show what he looked like. They show how long it took to become the version of himself the world now thinks it always knew.
