A school community in Attleboro is mourning a student killed in a crash just miles away.
Oliver Lewis, a 15-year-old cyclist who died after a vehicle hit him in Franklin this week, was identified by Bishop Feehan High School in a message sent to families and staff. Lewis was described by the school as an honor roll student and a soccer player.
The tragedy unfolded at about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, when police responded to multiple 911 calls about a vehicle striking a cyclist in the area of King Street near the I-495 north off-ramp in Franklin. Lewis was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Bishop Feehan President Tim Sullivan told the school community Wednesday that the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, though it was unclear whether charges will be filed. An investigation is ongoing.
Sullivan said he did not yet have information about funeral or memorial services. The last day of classes at the Catholic school was June 16. but he said counseling staff would be available for students on Thursday morning. Campus ministry staff also opened the school’s chapel for people who wanted to pray.
Lewis was identified as a rising sophomore at Bishop Feehan High School. He was a member of the school’s freshman soccer team, and information on the school’s website also described him as an honor roll student.
In his message to the community, Sullivan wrote that “Oliver was one of our own,” adding that his loss leaves “a real and lasting hole in our school family.” He said such moments remind people “how deeply we are connected to one another — and how much we need each other.”
Sullivan also offered words of faith and comfort, writing, “In this time of grief, may we hold one another close in faith and in love. We trust in God’s mercy and in the comfort of His presence — and we trust in each other.”
