O’Connell addresses Vikings QB race after McCarthy comments

Vikings quarterback – Kevin O’Connell says he doesn’t have a problem with J.J. McCarthy’s comments about the Vikings’ quarterback competition with Kyler Murray, as the team continues weighing who can win the QB1 role after McCarthy’s injury-marred start and Murray’s arrival.

For Kevin O’Connell, the Vikings’ quarterback competition isn’t just about throwing routes. It’s about who shows up when things are uncertain—and who keeps their focus when the room is split.

Minnesota has J.J. McCarthy in the mix alongside former Arizona Cardinal Kyler Murray. The expectation in the building was that McCarthy would have established himself as the team’s starting quarterback by now. Instead, his rookie season in 2024 ended early after he suffered a meniscus injury in his first preseason game. When the next season began. he dealt with multiple nagging injuries. and his performance when he wasn’t hurt was described as “quite ordinary.”.

The Vikings responded by bringing Murray in, setting up a direct comparison for O’Connell’s coaching staff: who can be the more effective leader for O’Connell and the better passer for wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, as well as tight end T.J. Hockenson.

O’Connell also made it clear that the competitive tone in the quarterback room isn’t a distraction. During the team’s OTA. he said he doesn’t have a problem with anything McCarthy said about the battle between the two candidates. Both quarterbacks, O’Connell emphasized, are taking it seriously and giving their all to win the QB1 position.

“I want players who are smart, tough guys that love football,” O’Connell said after the team’s OTA. “Guys who — I don’t even want to say are great teammates — that need to attempt to be a great teammate. You need to repeat that time and time again because that process never stops.”

What McCarthy said sits at the center of the moment. He told that the two men sit on opposite sides of the Vikings’ quarterback room—an awkward detail that added extra edge to a situation already loaded with meaning for a franchise still deciding which direction it will lean at quarterback.

Still, O’Connell has not publicly said whether either quarterback has an edge at this point. The competition also isn’t expected to be decided soon. With both quarterbacks taking the battle seriously. the process is likely to drag deep into training camp. with the outcome coming down to how each performs as the reps and evaluations pile up.

  1. I don’t get why people acting like McCarthy said something crazy. If he’s on the team, he’s supposed to talk. Also why is it only “ordinary” if he was injured half the time??

  2. They’re saying “no problem” but you can tell it’s tense cause they sit on opposite sides or whatever. Like that matters more than actually winning games. Murray already came in with hype, so of course everyone’s gonna compare stats.

  3. Meniscus injury ruined his whole rookie so I don’t blame him for comments. Meanwhile Kyler Murray is just roaming around acting like he’s still in Arizona. I swear these teams never decide anything until week 2 when fans are mad already.
