Hunter Biden calls Tapper out after memoir scrutiny

Hunter Biden accused CNN anchor Jake Tapper of unfairly attacking his stepmother, former first lady Jill Biden, after her new memoir “View from the East Wing” prompted critical scrutiny of how she described President Joe Biden’s mental state during the 2024 ca
Hunter Biden didn’t wait long after the memoir landed in public view. In a June 3 post on X, he accused CNN anchor Jake Tapper of “attacking” Jill Biden, saying the criticism was aimed at his stepmother rather than grounded in a fair reading of her account.
“So let me get this straight. Jake Tapper is focused on attacking my Mom,” Hunter Biden wrote, naming Tapper directly after Tapper questioned Jill Biden’s description of former president Joe Biden’s mental state during his 2024 re-election campaign—an effort that ended in defeat.
Hunter Biden, 56, also argued Tapper wasn’t devoting the same attention to controversies involving President Donald Trump’s children. The pushback landed at a sensitive moment for Jill Biden: the release of her memoir. “View from the East Wing. ” earlier this week has already made her a visible presence on major broadcast programs while the campaign-era debate over Joe Biden’s fitness for office remains politically raw.
The memoir’s central dispute traces to the way Jill Biden defended her husband’s ability to serve. In her book, she said, “If you knew Joe Biden well, you’d know that if he actually got to the point where he wasn’t capable of doing the job, he would step down.”
Tapper. in a critical analysis published in the days leading up to Hunter Biden’s post. argued Jill Biden’s claims were not persuasive. Tapper said he believed her assertions were “downright false. ” and he questioned whether the former president’s mental state showed signs of declining in later parts of 2024.
“The issue was never about whether he was good, wise, or had the same values,” Tapper wrote in his analysis. “It was about his ability to run for president, to win the campaign, and to serve as president.”
Jill Biden’s public appearances tied the political fight to a deeply personal one. On June 1, during an interview on NBC’s “Today” to promote “View from the East Wing,” she said Joe Biden is “doing OK” despite his ongoing battle with prostate cancer.
“I think if he had just been, you know, diagnosed with prostate cancer, that’s one thing, because that can be cured,” Jill Biden said. “But the fact that it metastasized to his bones, that makes it a whole different story.”
She added, “So I think Joe will live with cancer ’till the rest of his life.”
Behind the headlines. the family history that haunts Jill Biden’s public life and the loyalty behind Hunter Biden’s defense is stark. Hunter Biden’s biological mother, Neilia Hunter Biden, was killed in a car accident on Dec. 18, 1972. Also killed in the Delaware crash was Hunter’s sister, 13-month-old Naomi. Joe and Jill Biden later married in 1977.
The sequence of events now puts two narratives into direct collision: Jill Biden’s account of her husband’s fitness. and Tapper’s argument that her portrayal doesn’t hold up when the focus shifts from character and values to the realities of running a campaign and governing. Hunter Biden’s post is essentially a line drawn in the sand—between what he views as unfair scrutiny of his family and the broader media debate that has followed the memoir’s release.

This is such a distraction. Everybody fights on TV now.
Wait so Hunter’s mad Tapper “attacked” Jill? Like Tapper was supposed to just… not read the memoir? Also the whole mental state thing is messy anyway.
I don’t get why they’re acting like it’s only about Jill. If the memoir talks about Joe’s mental state, that’s literally what people are gonna question, right? And Hunter saying Tapper should focus more on Trump’s kids… sounds like whataboutism but I guess it’s politics so whatever.
Honestly this whole thing is just rich people PR. Like Jake Tapper is probably over it but then Hunter pops off and makes it worse. I saw clips like Jill said he’d step down if he wasn’t capable, but that could mean anything. Then they compare it to Trump which… ok but CNN still reports on both sides, not just one. I feel like the real issue is the timing of the memoir, not the words.
