The suspense in theaters was over for a lot of fans by midnight—now the wait is about what happens next. “Michael,” the 2026 biopic built around Michael Jackson’s rise, premiered in theaters and IMAX on Friday, April 24, and has since moved from big-screen hype to a confirmed digital countdown.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson—Michael Jackson’s nephew—the film takes viewers through the “King of Pop” story from his beginnings in the Jackson 5 into his early solo career through the 1970s and 1980s. Fans who sprinted to theaters this spring will soon be able to replay those moments at home.
“Michael” will be available for purchase on video-on-demand streaming services on June 9 for $24.99, according to Forbes and Newsweek. The list of platforms includes Fandango at Home, Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube Movies & TV. If viewers want to rent instead, prices would be about $19.99.
This shift to home viewing lands after a strong early box-office start. The film earned $97 million domestically in its opening weekend. As Variety reported last month, “Michael” now sits at more than $780 million worldwide, making it the second-highest musical biopic of all time.
One performance detail has been especially singled out in coverage of Jaafar Jackson’s preparation. The music writer Melissa Ruggieri said: “His liquid dance moves – highlighted as he teaches gang members the footwork in the ‘Beat It’ video − and soft-spoken cadence are studied to perfection. This is not about nepotism.”.
Lionsgate was contacted on June 4 about the release timing, but no response was received. For now, the digital date is the clearest signal yet that the movie’s momentum is being carried from the theater crowd to viewers streaming at home.
