Nicholas Godejohn Told Gypsy Rose He Was Death

In a new “We Need to Talk” podcast episode, Gypsy Rose Blanchard revisits the moments leading up to and following the 2015 killing of her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard—recalling what ex Nicholas Godejohn said right before the murder and the terror of he
Gypsy Rose Blanchard says the night her world collapsed didn’t start with a weapon—it started with a chilling exchange.
On the “We Need to Talk” podcast episode released Tuesday, June 9, the 34-year-old looked back at the moments before Nicholas Godejohn killed her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, in 2015. Gypsy recalled that Dee Dee had asked, “Who are you.” She said Godejohn responded, “I am death.”
Gypsy added that her account has been corroborated by court transcripts and by Godejohn’s conversations with his fellow inmates. Her recollection, she said, was shaped by a moment she couldn’t move past—when she heard her mother calling out and then what sounded like screaming.
“I remember her calling out for my name,” Gypsy said. “I felt like I wanted to go and help her, but I was terrified at the same time. Like my body was paralyzed. I couldn’t move.”
As the attack played out, Gypsy said she was focused on breathing and trying to block out what was happening. During the episode, she recalled hearing “screaming” coming from her mom.
“It was a horrible sound. It was screaming,” she said. “It was shock.”
Gypsy described how she hid in the bathroom and ended up in the “fetal position” while Godejohn was in the house. She said she remembered “one sharp scream and then nothing after that,” before realizing, in an instant, that it was over.
After the murder, Gypsy said she was “in a state of shock” over what happened. She recalled waiting for Godejohn while “completely naked” in the bathroom.
The case. as Gypsy frames it. is tied to years of alleged abuse by her mother. who was believed to have the psychological disorder known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy—where caregivers exaggerate or fabricate health issues for sympathy and attention. Gypsy said she met Godejohn online before they formed a close-knit relationship that turned into a romance. and that she helped plan the 2015 crime.
Dee Dee was 48 when she was stabbed to death by Godejohn.
In the courtroom, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. In 2016, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and she was released in December 2023.
Godejohn, meanwhile, admitted to killing Dee Dee and was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Gypsy also addressed another painful part of what came out around the relationship. She said Godejohn’s alleged “fantasy” was to assault Dee Dee before killing her. Gypsy said she believed that plan went too far—and that she “agreed” to let him sexually assault her instead.
“I felt like that was too far,” she said, adding that she “agreed” to let him sexually assault her instead. “I guess I agreed to something I didn’t fully understand. and that’s all I’ll say about that. ” she continued. “What’s even more horrible is I had to testify in court and I had to — I’m going to be open and honest — I had to. basically. say he didn’t rape me because he got me to agree to it.”.
A message shared via the podcast’s producers said Godejohn has “disputed” Gypsy’s allegations regarding the encounter.
The details Gypsy offers now land with a specific kind of weight: the words she says Dee Dee heard—“I am death”—sit alongside her description of paralysis. the bathroom hiding place. and the moment she believes she understood it was already finished. Her story. she says. is backed by court transcripts and conversations with fellow inmates. even as Godejohn disputes parts of her account about what happened between them.

“I am death” is seriously chilling. Like what else can you even say to that…
So the headline is basically she told her he was death and then her mom got killed?? I mean this is so messed up. I don’t get how anyone believes any of it though, like people can embellish. Still, sounds like trauma for sure.
Wait, I thought the whole thing was just a Netflix show situation and not like actual confirmed stuff. If it’s corroborated by transcripts then ok but also court transcripts can be twisted too? The part about her being frozen and hiding in the bathroom makes me sad, like how do you even process that.
This reminds me of those true crime podcasts where they always talk about “mom calling out” and then everyone’s like omg. But like, did Dee Dee really scream first or was it from after the fight started? Idk, my brain can’t handle details like “I couldn’t move” and “fetal position” back to back. Either way, “I am death” just sounds like some horror movie line, not real life.
