The 55-year-old rapper, whose stage name is Mystikal, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a third-degree rape case, according to Louisiana’s WBRZ. The judge set the term five years shy of the maximum.

Mystikal—born Michael Tyler—had pleaded guilty in March after entering a plea agreement with prosecutors. That deal reduced his first-degree rape charge to third degree. Days before the sentencing, however, Tyler tried to withdraw his guilty plea. He told the court he didn’t have time to “fully consider the consequences,” per WBRZ.

At the sentencing hearing, Tyler initially attempted to address the victim before turning to the court. “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” he said, according to the station.

Prosecutors said the false-imprisonment allegation stemmed from a claim that he took the victim’s keys and held her against her will. based on an arrest warrant that had been issued.

In March, prosecutors filed notices indicating they were no longer pursuing the other charges.

Tyler’s history also includes prior convictions and dropped charges. He served six years in prison after pleading guilty in 2003 to sexual battery. In December 2020. prosecutors in Caddo Parish. in northwest Louisiana. dropped rape and kidnapping charges that had kept him jailed for 18 months. Those charges stemmed from a 2016 accusation. He was not convicted of other charges that had been brought against him since the mid-1990s. including marijuana possession and misdemeanor domestic violence.

Mystikal’s celebrity career took off in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He gained prominence with songs such as “Shake It Fast” and “Danger (Been So Long),” and is a Cash Money Records alum.
