Murakami leaves early as White Sox worry grows

Munetaka Murakami exited the Chicago White Sox’s 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday, May 29, with hamstring tightness. Manager Will Venable said the early assessment points to a “little hamstring strain,” and he suggested the first baseman could miss “a

For a moment during the third inning on Friday, May 29, it looked like the Chicago White Sox could coast on momentum. Then Munetaka Murakami made a quick play—hit to center field, sprinted through first base—and his run ended with him reaching for his hamstring.

The Yankees of attention weren’t on him yet; the field was. White Sox manager Will Venable, the team’s medical staff, and Murakami’s interpreter, Kenzo Yagi, all ran onto the grass after the play was over.

Venable later characterized the injury in plain terms, calling it a “little hamstring strain on the initial evaluation.” He said Murakami will likely miss time, adding: “Probably a couple weeks.”

After the game, Murakami was expected to undergo more imaging on Saturday, a step the team is using to clarify what the tightness actually becomes when it’s tested.

Venable was careful when asked whether the White Sox would place the Japanese star on the injured list. He wouldn’t commit to an official decision.

Murakami himself declined to talk with the media after the game, but a White Sox spokesperson said he would be available to speak before Saturday’s contest.

The injury news landed against a season backdrop that still felt promising for Chicago. The White Sox entered Friday’s game with the fourth-best record in the American League. They now sit at 30-27 overall after a walk-off win in 10 innings. even as the team’s plans for the next stretch could hinge on what Saturday’s imaging shows.

The sequence is hard to ignore: Murakami left the game after hamstring tightness. the team’s medical staff moved quickly. and the manager pinned down an initial timeline—“probably a couple weeks”—without closing the door on an injured list decision. The White Sox got their result against the Detroit Tigers. but the real question now is how quickly this hamstring settles into something manageable.

  1. So he hurt his hamstring and just kinda walked off? I don’t get why they don’t say injured list yet. Seems like they’re waiting for the Yankees to notice or something.

  2. Wait, was the injury from that sprint through first or like, the weather or the field? “Imaging Saturday” like… they shoulda did that immediately right? Also hamstring strain = rest, why is it a whole whole thing.

  3. I swear these teams always say “little strain” and then he’s out longer than a couple weeks. Hamstring stuff is always shady. But Chicago being 30-27 is cool at least, so maybe they’ll be fine without him? Idk, I didn’t even finish reading, just saw the part about imaging.
