Mortal Kombat II Arrives on Digital June 9

After months of fans waiting for the tournament to hit the big screen, Mortal Kombat II is bringing the fight home—available to rent or buy digitally on June 9, with physical releases scheduled for July 28.

Mortal Kombat II is finally landing in living rooms next week, and the timing feels like more than just a release date.

The sequel, which centers on the deadly interdimensional martial arts tournament the title promises, hits digital platforms on June 9. From there, viewers will be able to rent or buy it digitally—meaning the action that the first film struggled to deliver is now the point.

That earlier problem sits in the background of everything here. Mortal Kombat spent nearly two hours “faffing about” before depicting the event it was named for. It also couldn’t be released theatrically during the pandemic, instead arriving straight to HBO Max in 2021. Mortal Kombat II. by contrast. takes place during the tournament. and that simple shift is being treated as the upgrade fans have been waiting for.

For viewers who prefer owning their movies, Mortal Kombat II also has a full physical rollout planned. A 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release is set for July 28.

The physical edition comes with extras designed to stretch beyond the fight scenes. They include Mortal Kombat II: Evolving the Saga. featuring returning characters. new alliances. and “even bigger fatalities. ” along with behind-the-scenes material on how the film expands the universe. There’s also Building the Realms of Mortal Kombat. guiding viewers from Edenia’s decaying streets to the Pit featured in the iconic video game series. focusing on how design teams blended practical sets with VFX.

Another bonus feature. Mortal Kombat II: Choose Your Fighter. invites audiences to “awaken your Arcana” by meeting the cast and exploring the brutal weapons. epic costumes. and training behind the characters. Klose Quarters Kombat puts the spotlight on stunt preparation. intense fight scenes. and weapons training—tying together the classic moves and the new combat styles.

A “Boon” to Gamers Everywhere rounds it out with a deep dive involving chief Mortal Kombat mythmaker and creator Ed Boon, looking at the franchise’s storied history and ongoing evolution across three decades of games, films, and comics—ending with the live-action sequel.

The sequel itself also makes its own kind of promise: it did away with a lot of the lore and worldbuilding from Mortal Kombat, functioning as a soft reset for the series. Reception to Mortal Kombat II was slightly more positive than the first movie, with its focus on action particularly praised.

Looking ahead, a third Mortal Kombat film is already in development. Mortal Kombat II screenwriter Jeremy Slater is set to pen the script, keeping the sequel’s momentum pointed toward what comes next.

  1. HBO Max couldn’t do theater during the pandemic, right? That’s why it took so long. Anyway “bigger fatalities” better be true bc I hate waiting for the good parts.

  2. Wait it says it’s better because it takes place during the tournament… but didn’t the first one also have tournaments? I’m confused. Also physical is July 28 like that’s forever from June lol.

  3. The extras sound like a whole video game documentary, not even gonna lie. “Choose Your Fighter” like it’s gonna pick my character for me? And Ed Boon thing at the end… isn’t he the one that makes the moves or whatever? I just want the movie to actually show the tournament instead of faffing around.
