Mindy Kaling is used to cameras and commentary around her appearance now—but she says the part that really sticks with her is the way scrutiny can land on someone who’s just trying to take care of her health.

“It’s sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight,” she told Bustle. She added that it “never a joy to be scrutinized. ” while also explaining that she “truly understand[s] it. as someone who consumes pop culture.” Kaling said her choice to lose weight wasn’t about “vanity reasons.”.

Her motivation, she said, is rooted in staying well for the long haul. Kaling pointed to a desire to stay fit and “live at least 20 more years” for her three children. “Do I wake up every day being like, ‘I look amazing, and I’m so gorgeous’?. No, unsurprisingly, but I truly feel so healthy,” she said.

  1. Okay but like… the headline says weight loss mindset shifts, and I’m just like why are we still pretending her body isn’t being watched all the time. It’s never just health 🙄

  2. She said she wants to live 20 more years for her kids but also says she doesn’t look amazing every day… isn’t that normal? I feel like she’s making it deeper than it is. Also walking + tai chi = weight loss now? seems kinda fake to me.

  3. The part about diabetes on both sides of her family caught me—like so is that why she did that 6 weeks thing with food before filming? I don’t know, I didn’t read all the way. But honestly the workout list sounds like she’s sponsored by every gym class on earth. Walking after dropping the kid off then calling a friend?? that’s just normal life, not a “fitness routine” lol.
