Midland police responded to an active shooting on June 12 in the 4600 block of West Wall Street and moved into a standoff with a suspected shooter, sending multiple people to hospitals and triggering lockdowns at Midland Memorial Hospital.
Police rushed into a neighborhood in Midland, Texas, after shots were reported from a building on the morning of June 12—and by mid-morning, authorities were describing an active shooting that had turned into a standoff.
The Midland Police Department responded to the incident at the 4600 block of West Wall Street on June 12. Midland spokesperson Stewart Doreen said police were in a “standoff” with a suspected shooter. Officers heard shots coming from a building and began clearing the area, Doreen said. Armored units and partner law enforcement agencies were on the scene.
Doreen said multiple people had been sent to hospitals. The public was urged to avoid the area while emergency responders worked.
The shooting also rippled through local healthcare operations. Midland Memorial Hospital was locked down starting at 8:20 a.m. local time due to an “active shooter event. ” according to the hospital’s Director of Planning. Marketing and Communications. Tasa Richardson. As of 10:10 a.m. the hospital lifted the lockdown for the main campus. but the emergency department remained locked down until further notice.
Richardson said the hospital established a family reunification point at the main campus. “Family members may enter through the main entrance doors and gather in hospital cafeteria. Please avoid the hospital if you are not in need of emergency medical attention,” Richardson said.
As Midland police worked the standoff, investigators were also looking at a separate shooting sequence days earlier. Midland police said they were searching for a man who fired at an officer with a rifle during a traffic stop on June 10. The officer was not injured. Police identified the suspect as Victor Mata Villarreal, and said he fled after the officer returned fire. Authorities said it was not clear whether the two incidents are related.
Taken together, the sequence leaves residents with the same uneasy question—whether the violence is part of one story or separate ones—while authorities continue to coordinate response efforts on the ground and keep the public away from the scene.
