Spurs superfan Sandy Vasquez in tears before Finals

Sandy Vasquez, a longtime Spurs supporter from Weslaco, says she cried when San Antonio advanced to the NBA Finals after 12 years and is now preparing to cheer again—hoping to make it to San Antonio for the loud energy at Frost Bank Center.

For Sandy Vasquez, Wednesday night can’t come soon enough.

The silver and black aren’t just a team in her house—they’re everywhere. Walking into her home in Weslaco, the first things you notice are autographed Spurs jerseys and a basketball set on display, a quiet map of a fandom that has lasted for decades.

Vasquez. who describes herself as a self-described Spurs superfan. said she’s ready to root for the San Antonio Spurs as they make a run at another championship after 12 years. The connection is older than the current roster. She remembers the team playing at the Alamodome back in the ‘90s, when she said hardly anyone would show up.

“My dad would take me all the time,” Vasquez said. “I can remember seeing them playing at the Alamodome back in the ‘90s. I remember no one would go because they weren’t good back then.”

That history matters to her now, because the wait is over. When the Spurs advanced to the finals after 12 years, Vasquez described a moment that hit her all at once.

“I was in tears. Calling my dad and screaming on the phone and he was telling me to calm down, but literally, I was in tears,” she said.

Her hopes for the Finals aren’t limited to watching from home. Vasquez said she wants to make it to San Antonio and feel it in person—specifically the atmosphere at the Frost Bank Center.

“To see excitement and all the people, just the feel of the hype squad, the energy — all the loud chanting,” she said.

The devotion didn’t start and stop with games. It grew while she worked on the Spurs sales team from 2007 to 2011, turning support into a kind of daily involvement. She plans to keep adding to her collection—not just for the memorabilia, but for what it represents.

“I don’t think I will ever get rid of that stuff that is part of me, who I am, and the impact the Spurs organization made in my life, and those are just little mementos of that time. I can’t be apart from them,” Vasquez said.

Even if the outcome doesn’t go the way she wants, she said she’ll be watching and cheering loudly for the Spurs.
