Memorial Day weekend swelters hit South Florida cities
South Florida’s Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be hot and dry, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s and heat indices climbing into the middle and upper 90s across Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.
Memorial Day weekend plans in South Florida may come with an unwelcome add-on: the heat.
The National Weather Service is forecasting hot, dry conditions across the region, with maximum temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. Heat indices are expected to rise into the middle and upper 90s as the days stretch toward summer.
In Miami, a maximum temperature of 88 degrees is forecast across Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Heat indices of 98 degrees are expected for the city on Saturday and Sunday. with a heat index of 97 forecast for Memorial Day itself. Rain chances are low: the forecast calls for a 0% chance of rain on Saturday. a 20% chance on Sunday. and a 10% chance on Monday.
Fort Lauderdale’s forecast is similarly punishing. The city is expected to reach 88 degrees on Saturday, with highs of 86 degrees across Sunday and Monday. Heat indices are forecast at 99 degrees on Saturday, with indices of 96 degrees on Sunday and Memorial Day. The rain outlook remains mostly dry. with a 0% chance of rain on Saturday. a 25% chance on Sunday. and a 10% chance on Memorial Day.
West Palm Beach will feel the heat too. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 88 degrees on Saturday and 87 degrees on Sunday and Memorial Day. Heat indices are forecast at 98 degrees for Saturday, with indices of 96 degrees on Sunday and Monday. Rain chances are again limited, with a 0% chance on Saturday, a 15% chance on Sunday, and a 5% chance on Memorial Day.
This stretch of extreme heat is landing after a period of unseasonably warm weather. The state at large is dealing with its worst drought in 25 years, and as temperatures intensify toward summer, wildfire dangers are expected to last longer than usual.
The forecast leaves little room for compromise: hot temperatures are expected to persist through the weekend while rain chances stay low, and that combination can make outdoor plans riskier even for people who assume the weather will “feel manageable” for brief errands.
The National Weather Service’s guidance for staying safe centers on hydration and timing: hydrates before you’re thirsty. wear lightweight clothing. and take breaks in shade or in an air-conditioned building. It also recommends limiting outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Finally, the NWS urges residents to stay informed by getting weather alerts via text.
For readers planning ahead, the message is simple even if the weekend won’t be: in South Florida, the forecast doesn’t just say it will be hot—it explains what the heat could feel like and when it will matter most.

So it’s gonna be hot… cool story. Just wear shorts and deal with it.
Heat index 99?? I feel like they always say “low rain” and then it still rains sideways. I’m bringing a poncho anyway.
Isn’t heat index basically the same thing as temperature? Like 98 means it’ll be 98 degrees, right? Either way I’m not going to the beach after 10.
Drought AND Memorial Day?? That seems extra messed up. I saw something about wildfire dangers so I’m guessing the whole weekend is gonna be smoke in the air. Might need to cancel the cookout, but then it says 0% rain so maybe we’re fine??
