The immediate jolt for Seattle is roster-related. The Mariners called up their top prospect, Colt Emerson, and the day didn’t stop there. The club optioned Leo Rivas to Tacoma and swapped him with infielder Patrick Wisdom.
Another change targets the bullpen mix. The Mariners traded a righty reliever, Domingo Gonzalez, for a lefty—Robinson Ortiz.
Then there’s Brennan Davis, added to the 40-man roster.. Davis had a clause in his contract that allowed him to opt out if the Mariners didn’t put him on their 40-man by this weekend and sign with a different organization.. Seattle wanted to keep the right-handed hitting outfielder in the organization, and the move locks that intention in.
On the mound, the plan is equally clear. Dan Wilson confirmed the Mariners will use a “piggyback start” with Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo. Miller will start, and Castillo will come in from the bullpen.
