Walmart starts restaurant meal deliveries with your grocery order

Walmart starts – Walmart has begun asking some Spark delivery workers at select stores to pick up restaurant orders from inside Walmart, including meals from locations such as McDonald’s and Dunkin’. The move expands Walmart’s e-commerce push, with restaurant deliveries in-app

When a Walmart order shows up on a Spark driver’s screen, it may soon come with a second stop that wasn’t there before: a restaurant inside the store.

Walmart began asking some Spark delivery workers at some stores to deliver restaurant orders. based on messages sent to the workers.. The orders involve picking up food at restaurants located inside Walmart, including some McDonald’s and Dunkin’ locations.. One in-app message viewed by Business Insider indicated that the restaurant deliveries began last Monday.

Another message—sent via email to a Spark worker—told drivers that some restaurant orders would be batched for delivery along with orders of Walmart merchandise.. The email also said: “You may start seeing restaurant delivery offers from participating restaurants located inside Walmart stores in your area. offering more ways to earn.” It added that the orders “may include items like meals. sides. or drinks.”

Walmart’s spokesperson declined to comment, citing a quiet period ahead of the company’s next earnings report on Thursday.

The restaurant option is a new frontier for Walmart’s e-commerce business.. Walmart’s e-commerce sales topped $150 billion in global sales for the first time last fiscal year. and this expansion aims to move beyond groceries and general merchandise—into food delivery that starts from within the retailer’s own store network.

That approach matters because Walmart’s existing Spark delivery operation is already under pressure.. Spark uses Walmart’s 4. 600 US stores to fill orders. with a service that focuses on same-day deliveries of fresh produce. electronics. and other Walmart merchandise.. The faster Walmart tries to deliver, the more strain it places on store workers who pick items and pack orders.

Restaurant delivery brings its own layer to that workflow, even if only a subset of stores are testing it.. Alongside national chains like McDonald’s and Dunkin’, some Walmart stores host regional restaurants.. California-based hot dog chain Wienerschnitzel said last year that it would open restaurants at several Walmart stores in the Western US.

Walmart has also grown Spark over the last several years. The company introduced the service in 2018, and Spark drivers deliver not only for Walmart. The service is used by other retailers as well, including Home Depot and Sur La Table.

Between the start date embedded in in-app messages. the email describing how deliveries could be batched with store merchandise. and the restaurants located inside Walmart itself. the direction is clear: Walmart is trying to turn the same delivery network used for consumer goods into a platform for meals.

For now, the details remain limited to what the Spark messages describe and what participating restaurants in each area choose to offer. Walmart declined to add further comment ahead of its next earnings report on Thursday.
