The moment his sunglasses slipped into a campground vault toilet in Shaver Lake, Saturday turned into a nightmare of timing, cramped space, and unpleasant stakes.

Fresno County Sheriff’s Department deputies and Cal Fire crews were called at around 2:15 p.m. after a man became stuck in a confined space—specifically the waterless, non-flushing holding tank for the toilet—authorities said.

After the sunglasses tumbled into the toilet, the man went after them, and that decision left him trapped inside the tank for about 10 to 15 minutes before rescuers were able to remove him. Authorities said he avoided any major injuries.

Once extracted, Cal Fire sprayed the man down to decontaminate him before he left the scene, KTLA reported.

Asked whether the man was at least able to retrieve his glasses, a sheriff’s spokesperson said he did not know the fate of the eyewear but suspected they may have been lost to the vault. The sheriff’s department also added that incidents like this are incredibly rare.
