Davenport, Iowa — On Friday morning, KWQC anchor Dustin Nolan looked straight into the same audience he’d been welcoming to their routines for years. Then he ended it.
In an emotional on-air goodbye. Nolan announced he’s “chosen to step away from the new industry.” Before he let the segment close. he didn’t focus on what he was leaving so much as what he believed the audience deserved. He thanked viewers for trusting him “these past few years” to bring them the news. saying he has given “everything I have.”.
“I have chosen to step away from the news industry,” Nolan said. He added that he hoped everyone he had been allowed to be part of their mornings understood “just how important” the job has been to him. He told viewers he’s never tried to be “perfect” or what he said “a newsman should be supposed to be. ” but insisted he has tried to be transparent. bringing them the facts and “always been myself.”.
He returned again and again to the relationship between a local station and the people watching it. “We. as a local news station. owe you. the viewers. the best that we can do. ” he said. adding that without viewers. “none of us would be able to do this job.” Then came the line that turned the goodbye into a message.
Nolan argued that local news has to be more than “trends or sanitized news.” He said that kind of coverage makes people uncomfortable, and that “the facts matter.”
“We have to take people out of their bubbles and comfort zones and make them think about the world we all live in,” he said.
KWQC is based in Davenport. Iowa. and covers the Quad Cities—Davenport. Iowa; Bettendorf. Iowa; Rock Island. Ill.; and Moline. Ill. Nolan’s LinkedIn says he has been working at the station since 2022. In his sign-off. he also thanked his co-anchor. Jenna. telling viewers: “The hardest part of this job for me is the realization that I won’t be working with Jenna anymore. because she isn’t just the greatest go anchor on the news desk. but she is the greatest co-anchor in life as well.”.
What remains after the goodbye is a debate he brought to the air with him: whether “sanitized news” protects comfort—or whether it keeps people from confronting the world outside their bubbles.

So he quits because he thinks the news is too “sanitized”? Sounds like he just wanted a bigger paycheck.
I didn’t even see the segment but everyone keeps saying he was going off about “bubbles”?? Local news has to keep it civil or people freak out. Maybe he can’t handle it.
Not sure what sanitized news means exactly, but if it’s like “no politics” then he’s acting dramatic. Also stepping away from the industry… like for what, teaching? Podcast? He said facts matter but then the whole thing was super emotional.
Good for him? Or is this just PR. I feel like local stations are always trying to keep viewers comfortable, but taking people out of bubbles sounds like he wants them to be scared of everything. Quad Cities drama every time. Jenna too??
