Mamdani heads to Twitch with “Talk with the People”

Mamdani heads – New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to launch a Twitch chat show, “Talk with the People,” starting May 21 at 4 p.m., answering public questions live in the platform’s chat while streaming across multiple social networks.
On May 21 at 4 p.m., New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to step off the traditional City Hall stage and into the live chat stream.
He’s launching a Twitch streaming series titled “Talk with the People,” beginning that day at 4 p.m. The program will also be available live on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky. Twitch. which began as a gaming platform and has since expanded to include politics and other non-gaming content. will be the home of the series.
In that chat, the mayor will respond to questions from the public directly.
“With the launch of ‘Talk with the People’ we’re bringing City Hall to the platforms where New Yorkers already are — speaking directly with the people. ” Mayor Mamdani told Polygon in a written statement. “By launching the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official. where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch. we’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people. especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long.”.
The choice of format fits the way Mamdani rose to prominence. He gained political fame—and the New York mayor’s office—by wielding the power of social media. Now. he’s leaning into another technology route that could bring him closer to his constituency. and the broader national population. than ever before.
The title itself also carries a nod to New York’s past. “Talk with the People” may sound like a 21st-century version of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chats” radio broadcasts from the 1930s and ’40s. But it’s actually a reference to beloved socialist Mayor LaGuardia’s 1940s radio show. called “Talk to the People. ” which used then-cutting-edge technology to bypass the middleman and speak directly to citizens of New York.
That history—of leaders finding a channel that skips the gatekeepers—sits at the center of this new move: Mamdani isn’t just talking at the public. He’s planning to talk with them, through the Twitch chat, as the question stream runs in real time.

So he’s gonna do government stuff on Twitch now? Wild.
Why does this feel like a PR stunt. If he’s answering questions live why not do it on the City Hall website like normal people.
I saw this and thought it was just him gaming with people, like answering while playing Fortnite or whatever. Also Twitch is basically not even accessible half the time. But sure “talk with the people” I guess.
Bluesky AND TikTok AND Facebook AND X… that’s like throwing spaghetti at the internet and hoping someone catches the message. If he’s really talking directly then why is the question moderated or whatever? Idk I’m skeptical, sounds like he’s trying to skip the middleman but it’s still gonna be hype. LaGuardia connection is cool though I guess, but I’m not trying to hear politics in a chat box at 4pm.
