Michael Keating, EastEnders and Blake’s 7 star, dies aged 79

Michael Keating, known to many viewers as Vila Restal in Blake’s 7 and for a recurring role in EastEnders, has died aged 79. Tributes poured in online, alongside details of his career from Doctor Who to Big Finish audio productions.

When the news began spreading across social media that Michael Keating had died. the reaction was immediate—and deeply familiar to anyone who grew up with his characters. Fans and fellow performers alike framed the loss not just as the end of a career. but as the fading of a presence they associated with long-running stories and unmistakable performances.

Keating died at the age of 79. The news was first reported on numerous social media accounts, including Cult Edge, the publisher of multiple Blake’s 7 books. On Cult Edge’s X account. a post said: “So terribly sad to hear reports that we’ve lost Michael Keating. What a loss, and what a wonderful man. He’ll be hugely missed. Thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Michael, and thank you xx”.

Paul Carmichael, who is behind Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey podcast, also marked the passing on the platform. He wrote: “So sorry to hear that Michael Keating has died. A fine actor with a wonderful career. including a recurring role in #EastEnders. but to me he will always be the wonderful Vila in #Blakes7. RIP.”.

Born in London in 1947. Keating’s screen work reached back into the late 1970s with an early role as Goudry in a 1977 Doctor Who story. The Sun Makers. His best-known moment to many came in 1978, when he played Vila Restal in Blake’s 7. Vila was the only character to appear in all episodes of the sci-fi series, which ran until 1981.

Keating’s career stretched across a wide range of British television. Other roles listed include Yes Minister, Casualty, Micro Men and Midsomer Murders. In 2005, he began playing Reverend Stevens in EastEnders, and that recurring character appeared in episodes right through until 2017.

His final on-screen appearance came with Reverend Stevens telling June Brown’s Dot that he was retiring and moving to live with his daughter in Australia.

Across audio, Keating also became a familiar voice. He appeared in numerous audio productions for Big Finish. with Blake’s 7 producer Peter Anghelides describing the work in a statement: “What a joy it was to work with Michael. Little did I realise when first encountering him at BBC Television Centre in 1981 that some three decades later I would be writing and producing Big Finish Blake’s 7 audio stories for him as Vila Restal.”.

Anghelides added details from the studio days, recalling Keating’s comic timing and a joke that turned into something else. “His cheery presence on studio days was always most welcome. I would sit at the back of the Audio Sorcery control room hooting with laughter at his comic timing in our recordings. In the green room when we recorded the first full-cast audio Warship he jokingly suggested that there should have been a planet named ‘Vere’ after his old colleague. TV director/producer Vere Lorrimer. so obviously I smuggled that idea into a later script. much to Michael’s great delight.”.

For Blake’s 7 fans. the affection was rooted in consistency: Keating played Vila. the only character to appear in every Blake’s 7 TV episode between 1978 and 1981. and in both BBC Radio plays. Even in the series’ early planning, Vila’s place wasn’t guaranteed. At one point while planning the second series. Terry Nation thought Vila was a “borderline case” for being dropped as a Liberator regular. until the production team acknowledged the character’s popularity—something credited “in no small part thanks to Michael’s adroit performance as the career thief and reluctant rebel.”.

Now, as tributes continue to move through timelines and fan communities, what stands out is the same thread running through the reports: the sense that Keating wasn’t only part of these shows—he helped make them feel like they belonged to the people who followed them.

  1. Wait so did he die in London or like… in the US? I saw something about EastEnders and my feed just went off. Either way RIP.

  2. I didn’t even know he was in Doctor Who, I thought that was all just made up clips lol. Blake’s 7 was kinda like Star Trek but worse? Idk. Still sad though, sounded like he was in everything

  3. So “first reported on Cult Edge” doesn’t mean it was true right away, people repost rumors all the time. But if it’s real… Vila Restal forever. My uncle used to say EastEnders characters are the same vibe as Blake’s 7 like somehow. RIP Michael Keating.
