Malia and Sasha Obama join parents for Obama Center opening

Malia and Sasha Obama appeared publicly together on Thursday, June 18, joining their parents—Barack and Michelle Obama—for the opening ceremony of the new Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side.
On Thursday. June 18. the spotlight moved to Chicago’s South Side—and for a brief moment. it found the Obama family in full. Malia Obama and Sasha Obama returned together in public as they joined former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama during the opening ceremony of the new Obama Presidential Center.
Malia, 27, stepped onto the stage wearing an oversized light gray blazer cinched at the waist over a dark gray miniskirt. Sasha. 25. wore an asymmetrical white draped top over a matching skirt or dress. finished with a brown leather belt featuring a decorative circular buckle. Michelle Obama wore a striped gray-and-white Thom Browne suit over a white top. while Barack Obama wore a classic dark suit with a blue tie.
Michelle Obama delivered remarks during the ceremony, her voice stirring laughter and then something closer to emotion. When she mentioned former President George W. Bush’s attendance, the crowd laughed. When she recounted Barack Obama’s Nobel Prize, the room cheered.
Her beginning signaled the personal weight of the day. She started with a tissue at hand, and as she spoke, emotion clearly carried in both directions. When Michelle Obama asked her husband to look directly at her, Barack Obama’s visible feelings matched the moment. Their daughters joined in, dabbing their eyes with tissues as the ceremony moved forward.
The opening drew a familiar roster from modern American political life. Other former presidents in attendance included Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Former first lady Laura Bush and former first lady Jill Biden were also present.
The center itself is a major new civic project on Chicago’s South Side: a 19-acre campus that includes a soaring museum. a Chicago Public Library branch. an athletic center with an NBA-regulation-size basketball court. a civic center. a playground. and a vegetable garden similar to the one Michelle Obama planted on the White House’s South Lawn.
For the Obamas’ family, the opening also echoes a less public chapter. Malia and Sasha were among the youngest residents of the White House in decades, moving in when Malia was 10 and Sasha was 7. Their time in public life has largely been defined by an effort to keep ordinary routines intact.
In a May 19 episode of the “Baby, This is Keke Palmer,” Michelle Obama described how she and Barack tried to maintain normalcy for their daughters during what she called their abnormal childhoods. She said the girls were encouraged to do sleepovers, bar mitzvahs, and other typical activities.
“With them, it was really just trying to keep them focused on their lives. They could never miss school or something that they had to do for school because something cool was happening right at the White House. ” Michelle Obama told Keke Palmer. “They only traveled with us on their breaks – so summers. and there’s spring break when they weren’t at camp – so the goal was to make their lives as normal as possible.”.
At the ceremony, that push toward a grounded family life landed in the open again—Malia and Sasha standing alongside their parents as the new center opened its doors in Chicago.
