Xbox ports of Black Ops games lag as PS release nears
Treyarch says Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012) will be ported to PlayStation in July by Iron Galaxy Studios—an upgrade PS4 and PS5 players have been waiting for after PS3-era backwards compatibility disappeared. But Xbox and
A message posted on a Wednesday afternoon landed like a calendar reminder for PlayStation players—July is when two classic Call of Duty games are set to arrive natively on Sony’s current consoles.
Treyarch. the Call of Duty developer behind many entries in the franchise. announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012) will be brought to PlayStation. The studio said the port work will be handled by Iron Galaxy Studios. The timing is close: the games are slated for release in July.
For longtime fans, the promise is simple—no more streaming. Both Black Ops and Black Ops 2 were originally released for Xbox 360, PC, and PS3. Since 2016, when Microsoft’s Xbox Backwards Compatibility Program began, those same titles have been playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
On PlayStation, the situation has been different. PS4 and PS5 are not backwards compatible with PS3 games. Until now, the only path to play these Call of Duty titles on modern PlayStation consoles has been streaming them through PlayStation Plus Premium.
The port announcement also left open practical questions for players who already own the PS3 versions. At the moment. it’s unclear whether owners of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on PS3 will be able to get the new native PlayStation port for free or transfer their progress. If transfer or upgrades exist, they may be limited to players with a digital copy of the games.
There’s another unanswered issue: how the multiplayer infrastructure will work in the new versions. It’s presumed the ports will connect to the games’ existing server network rather than using new servers, but that has not been confirmed.
For PlayStation owners. the biggest appeal is obvious—native access to Black Ops and Black Ops 2 without streaming. arriving in a matter of weeks. Still. the same announcement has triggered a sharper reaction on Xbox and PC. where players say the “current” versions have not received the attention they need.
The complaints are specific and long-running. There are widespread complaints that both Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are locked to basic 720p resolution when played through Xbox Backwards Compatibility. Players also say hackers have infested the servers across both games on both platforms “for years.” On top of that. some players are frustrated that the titles are not on Xbox Game Pass and that DLC still requires separate purchases.
One angry fan summed up the mood bluntly: “Microsoft and Xbox really hate their own customers. Yes a Xbox 360 version exists. But they are locked at 720p. They are full of hackers. After 2.75 years of the ABK acquisition they still aren’t even on Game Pass. The DLCs aren’t bundled in. What the f*** man.”.
The sequence of events is hard to miss: PlayStation players are being pulled toward a July native port, while Xbox and PC players are left waiting for fixes to the versions they already have access to.
Treyarch, Iron Galaxy Studios, and Xbox now have an immediate opportunity to respond to that mismatch. At minimum, players are asking for updates to Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on Xbox and PC so they can be brought closer to what the incoming PlayStation ports will offer.
For now, Treyarch has put the spotlight on July and the PlayStation release. Xbox and PC players are watching for whether the next step includes the fixes they say they’ve needed for a long time.

So wait PS4 players have been streaming BO1 this whole time? That’s wild.
July huh. I’m just tired of paying for the “premium” thing to play older games. If they don’t let PS3 progress transfer I’m out.
Does this mean Xbox is getting the lag fixed too? Cuz I swear BO2 on my Xbox feels like it’s stuttering since forever. Also Iron Galaxy… aren’t they the ones who messed up ports before?
Ngl the backwards compatibility thing is confusing. Like can you still play PS3 discs on PS5 or not? If not then “native port” better include multiplayer servers or it’s gonna be dead on arrival.
