The brigade behind the rally—led by James Orengo, Babu Owino, Edwin Sifuna, and Raphael Tuju—began earlier in Nyalenda after attending a church service.. From there, the convoy moved toward Kowuor Grounds in Kisumu East, setting up the confrontation that later unfolded at Kondele, a key junction for road traffic linking the city to major routes.
At Kondele, groups of youths barricaded parts of the road using burning tyres, briefly paralysing movement along the busy route..
