At 6:15 p.m., Springfield police said they found a little girl injured on train tracks behind Emily Street. The toddler was taken to Bay State Hospital, where she died from her injuries, the Springfield Police Department posted on X.
The girl was 21 months old, police said, and she was struck by an Amtrak train. The train was en route from Albany to Boston, Amtrak told The Boston Globe. Emily Street is a residential street that sits next to train tracks.
Springfield police said they are investigating the incident. Springfield police did not respond to a request for comment, and Amtrak also did not respond to a request for comment.

This is heartbreaking. But I keep thinking… why are there train tracks that close to houses in the first place? Like who approved that.
21 months old is way too young, I can’t even process that. Also wasn’t there some rule about Amtrak not going so fast through residential areas? Not saying it’s their fault but cmon.
I saw this on my feed and I thought it was like a prank or something at first, then it says she died at Bay State Hospital… awful. Springfield better tighten up security or whatever, fences or cameras or idk. Trains shouldn’t be able to just hit people that close to streets, even if it’s an accident.
