A 4-year-old girl was pronounced dead after Los Angeles police responded Tuesday to a call about an unresponsive child inside a hot vehicle in Valley Village.
Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Warner Castillo said officers were dispatched at 3:30 p.m. to the 1200 block of McCormick Street after receiving reports of a child who was not responsive. When officers arrived, Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were already providing medical aid. Castillo said paramedics pronounced the child dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Juvenile Division is investigating the case. Castillo also said the Los Angeles County medical examiner will determine the child’s cause of death. Authorities did not release further information.
Investigators are treating the death as a suspected hot car death, a law enforcement source said, requesting anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.
A source close to the family. also not authorized to speak to the media. said the child was a girl who was part of a neighborhood carpool. The child was found in the vehicle only after her mother arrived to pick her up from preschool. the source said. It remains unclear why the girl was left in the vehicle.
The carpool driver has not been arrested.
Louis Shapiro, the attorney for the carpool driver, said his client was distraught and still processing the tragedy. “We feel heartbroken for the family who lost a child here,” Shapiro said.
