Google Search bar gets AI facelift—what changes now

Google Search – Google says its “biggest update” to Search in more than 25 years is landing through AI Mode, adding a more conversational interface, “Search agents” running in the browser, improved booking features, and Google Antigravity—along with Personal Intelligence sync
On May 19, Google flipped the switch inside its search bar—quietly at first for users, but with big implications for how people get answers.
The company is calling it the “biggest update” to Google Search in more than 25 years. And the change isn’t framed as a replacement for the classic results page. Instead, Google is pushing the action into its AI Mode, where the search bar starts behaving more like a chatbot.
In 2025, Google rolled out AI Mode as an advanced search engine toggle aimed at giving a more conversational experience. Now, most of the new updates are coming to that same toggle, powered by Google’s newly released AI model, Gemini 3.5 Flash.
Google also says the traditional Google Search experience—the familiar list of blue links from a search query—will remain available with minor updates to AI Overview.
For readers deciding whether to try the upgrade, the questions are immediate: what actually changes, what features are real, and when do they arrive?
The old Google Search bar isn’t going away. Users can still type a question or keywords and get a list of blue links to websites. Google’s statement also makes clear the main difference for now is where those requests can be directed—into AI Mode.
To access AI Mode, users can click “AI Mode” or the plus sign button within the search bar.
Inside AI Mode, Google is steering the search experience toward conversation. Users can ask follow-up questions, and the interface is designed to feel more natural—similar to other AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Claude.
Google also introduced “Search agents,” described as AI personal assistants that run in the background of a user’s browser 24/7. Those agents pull information from blogs, news sites, social media posts, and online marketplaces.
In one example, Google Vice President of Search Elizabeth Reid wrote that if a user wants to know instantly when favorite pro athletes announce a sneaker collab, their agent would alert them when a new drop lands so they don’t miss it.
The feature set expands beyond answering questions. Google says AI Mode includes improved booking capabilities for dining, ticketed events, and beauty care appointments.
The workflow is built around sharing specific criteria—Reid’s example is finding a private karaoke room for six on a Friday night that serves food late. Google says Search then brings together the latest pricing and availability with direct links so users can finish booking through the provider of their choice.
For certain categories such as home repair, beauty, or pet care, Google says Search can call businesses on a user’s behalf. Users will answer a series of prompts before Google makes the call, and then users receive a summary of the call afterward. Google says this feature rolls out this summer.
Google Antigravity is also moving into Search. The AI-powered development program, launched in November, is designed to build applications from prompts rather than traditional coding. With the updates, Google says Antigravity will be available inside Google Search’s AI Mode.
Google Antigravity will allow users to ask for interactive visuals, graphics, tables, graphs, or simulations. Google says Antigravity will be available to users this summer.
As an example. Google says Antigravity could create an interactive fitness tracker for someone building a new health and wellness routine. That tracker could include an interactive weekly workout schedule. a meal tracker. and a live map for outdoor workout routes—generated by Antigravity coding the tracker.
There’s another shift aimed at personalization. Google’s Personal Intelligence is available in the newly updated AI Mode, and Google says there’s no subscription needed. Personal Intelligence allows users to sync Google apps like Gmail and Photos. and—soon—Calendar. to enable more personalized responses when using Search.
Google’s rollout timing is anchored to a single date: the updates to Google AI Mode began rolling out on May 19. according to a Google blog post. The rest of the features—such as business-calling for certain categories. booking-related capabilities in specific areas. and Google Antigravity—are tied to summer availability.
The result is a search bar that still offers blue links for users who want the familiar experience, while simultaneously pushing a growing set of tasks—planning, booking, calling, and generating interactive content—into an AI-driven layer within the same interface.
