King Charles readies UK welcome as Sussex return looms

Trooping the Colour was already underway in London—king’s birthday festivities unfolding as the royal family watched from the stands—when the idea of a return from California was quietly taking shape.

King Charles. 77. has offered royal accommodations to Prince Harry. 41. and Duchess Meghan Markle. 44. and their family for a visit to the United Kingdom next month. according to a report published June 17 by the Daily Telegraph. The plan, if it moves forward, would mark Harry’s first trip back to the U.K. in four years, bringing his two children with him: Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5. But as of June 19, there had been no response to that offer.

The lack of an answer carries its own weight in a story that has never been just about logistics. Harry and Meghan have previously been offered accommodations at Buckingham Palace during trips to the U.K.—and they declined.

Even if the Sussexes accept King Charles’s offer, security would not automatically change. Any additional protective measures would be determined by the Home Office, not by the royal household.

That distinction matters because Harry has pointed to security as a central reason behind the family’s break from royal life. The dramatic departure in 2020—dubbed “Megxit. ” a play on Brexit—followed what he described as serious concerns about his family’s safety while on British soil. He has said the family lacked security, and that the absence of adequate protection was part of the falling out.

Harry’s security was downgraded after he stepped back from royal life and duties in 2020. As a result, the couple lost their tax-funded police protection. Since then, Harry has fought for security to be reinstated. Last year, he lost an appeal in a U.K. court over the levels of security he and his family are entitled to while spending time in Britain.

In 2023, Harry framed the issue in personal terms, describing the U.K. as home and a place he wants his children to experience as familiar. “The U.K. is my home. The U.K. is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States. ” he said. “That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on U.K. soil.” He added: “I can’t put my wife in danger like that. ” and said he was “reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too.”.

The June 2020 break left a new baseline for every later visit. including what the public has and hasn’t been able to see. The Sussexes now live in California. and their planned July trip would be the first time the family has visited Harry’s home country since June 2022. when the four joined a celebration marking Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign. Meghan was last in the U.K. in September 2022 for the Queen’s funeral.

With King Charles’s accommodation offer on the table and the Home Office still the gatekeeper for security. the question in the background isn’t whether the royal family can host the Sussexes. It’s whether the conditions for safety—something Harry has repeatedly said is non-negotiable—can align with what the trip would require.

MISRYOUM has not published any confirmed answer from the Sussexes; the outlet reached out to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment, but there had been no response as of June 19.
