On the red carpet for their Netflix rom-com Office Romance at the Hollywood Egyptian Theatre on May 26, Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein looked back on their first meeting—complete with Lopez’s quick chemistry read and her joking reassurance that he “wasn’t
When Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein walked the red carpet side by side at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre on May 26, it looked like a pair that had already found its rhythm. But the real takeaway came when Lopez explained what her very first encounter with her Office Romance costar felt like.
Lopez told Variety the moment was “friendly and easy,” and she said she felt the chemistry quickly. “Yeah. I think we did. I knew that we were friendly and easy right away. which was nice.” She added that. unlike some awkward first meetings. Goldstein didn’t give off any uneasy vibes. “I never had that impression that you were a ‘weirdo.’”.
Then she turned to him with a grin and made it personal. “Sometimes if you meet somebody and it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, he’s kind of a weirdo, but it’s okay, we’ll make this work,’” Lopez said—before landing the line that got a laugh from Goldstein: “You weren’t a weirdo! Yay!”
Goldstein answered with his own moment of wonder, telling Lopez, “That’s the first person you said that to. What a delight.” He later kept it simple when he described the first meeting—“No, it was easy. We were laughing, and first time, very easy.”
The conversation also circled back to how the project came together. Goldstein co-wrote Office Romance with Joe Kelly, and he was candid about pitching his script to Lopez. He asked. “Were you nervous [when you were] like. here’s a script I wrote for you?” Lopez replied. “Yeah. so nervous… Like I didn’t know.” She said she was a big fan of Goldstein’s and knew he was “brilliant. ” but she still didn’t know whether they’d “get on” or make “a good film together.”.
For Goldstein, the gamble was real. “And it’s just a f****** gamble,” he said, before adding, “but I’m so pleased with how it turned out.”
That night’s premiere wasn’t just about Lopez and Goldstein. Several cast members turned up as well, including Betty Gilpin, Amy Sedaris, Edward James Olmos, Jodie Whittaker, Jackie Sandler, Mary Wiseman, and Tony Hale.
