Jazz Chisholm Jr. was still chasing the play when everything went wrong.

In the top of the fourth inning of Monday night’s Yankees–Tigers game. the New York second baseman left after a collision with left fielder Jasson Dominguez. Both players went after a shallow fly ball, and Dominguez’s elbow caught Chisholm in the chin. The Yankees were already trailing a 7–0 lead by the time he exited at Yankee Stadium. with Oswaldo Cabrera coming in to replace him.

Chisholm’s night did not start calmly. It has been a rough 24 hours for the second baseman: he was ejected Sunday for arguing a check-swing call against the Red Sox and then left without talking to reporters. Before Monday’s game, he told the YES Network that he had to be a better teammate.

The collision lands with added tension around his long-term future in New York. Chisholm. who has been vocal about wanting an extension from the Yankees. has not played well enough to seriously enter the conversation. at least based on his production this season. He was hitting .229 with a .318 on-base percentage, with nine home runs and 29 RBIs across 274 plate appearances. He has, however, stolen 20 bases.

The timing also comes on the heels of a weekend collapse. The Yankees were swept in four games at the Red Sox over the weekend.

Taken together. the sequence is jarring: a game already decided early ends with an in-play injury and concussion protocol. while the day before featured an ejection and a quick exit from reporters—then a public promise to be better. For Chisholm. the stakes are now simple and immediate—his health and whether he’s cleared to return—while the bigger question of how his season fits with a future in pinstripes hangs over everything else.
