Idris Elba calls a Black Bond unrealistic, citing markets

Idris Elba, long rumored as a potential 007, says a Black James Bond isn’t realistic and argues the role should stay “pure” escapism. His comments come as Amazon MGM Studios searches for the next Bond and Denis Villeneuve prepares the next film.
For years, Idris Elba’s name has circled around the James Bond rumor mill. But in a recent British GQ profile published June 8, the “Hijack” star pushed back hard on the idea that a Black actor will land the iconic role.
Elba. who has also been linked in fan-castings as a contender for 007. said he believes that casting a Black man as Bond is “not a realistic thing.” He said James Bond was “written how he was written for a reason. ” adding that while he’s been complimented for the possibility. “in realistic terms. some markets just don’t go for that.”.
He continued: “Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”
Elba also framed his own connection to the role as something he never viewed as more than speculation. He said that despite years of talk, him playing Bond was “never legit” and “always simply a rumor.”
His stance didn’t stop at casting. Elba argued against pushing the character too far toward what he called heavy modernization, pointing to the upcoming film as a moment to keep Bond recognizable. “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good,” he said. “But let’s not try and make it woke.”
He added: “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
Elba’s comments land as the franchise enters a new phase behind the scenes. In May, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that “the search for the next James Bond is underway.” Denis Villeneuve has been tapped as the director for the next Bond film, but no star has been cast.
Daniel Craig—Bond’s most recent actor—retired from the role with 2021’s “No Time to Die.” Before Craig, the role was played by Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, and Sean Connery.
The franchise’s direction has been debated for years. In 2020. longtime Bond series producer Barbara Broccoli told Variety that going forward. the character must remain male. but he “can be of any color.” Since then. Amazon has taken control of the franchise following a 2025 agreement with Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
Elba’s skepticism isn’t the only one to have surfaced publicly. In 2022, “Star Wars” actor John Boyega suggested he wouldn’t play Bond because he is Black. On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. Boyega said. “When you’re Black. I don’t know how that goes. ” and added that it would be “very surprising” to him if the next Bond is a Black man.
A release date for the next Bond movie hasn’t been set, though it’s expected to be a few years away. In the meantime, Villeneuve is focused on finishing his sci-fi sequel “Dune: Part Three,” which hits theaters in December.
All those threads—Elba’s market-based doubts, the franchise’s stated openness to “any color,” and the ongoing search with Villeneuve at the helm—are colliding at the moment the next 007 is still undecided.
