Hutchinson targets Defensive Player of the Year in 2026
Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson says his focus for 2026 is clear after a long recovery from a gruesome leg injury in 2024, a productive 2025 that included a long-term contract extension, and a full offseason to get his body right.
Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson didn’t hesitate when asked during Organized Team Activities whether he’s chasing the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2026 season.
“Do I have aspirations for Defensive Player of the Year? Yeah, the mentality is always that, for sure,” Hutchinson said, framing the goal as something he expects from himself rather than something he’s hoping happens.
That mindset carries the weight of what came before. In 2024, Hutchinson was the betting favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year before his season ended with a gruesome leg injury. The injury didn’t just cut short what people expected from him—it became the story around him.
By 2025, Hutchinson said he was happy to show he could get back on the field. He also secured a long-term contract extension with the Lions. When he looked back on the past season, he tied his satisfaction to everything happening around his return and the pressure that followed his injury.
“I’m really happy with last year. with what I did with a lot going on. whether that be contract. whether that be expectation from people seeing me break my leg. there was a lot of stuff that happened last year. ” Hutchinson said. “To have the production I had. I’m really happy with how last year went. and this year. I got to have a full offseason to train and get my body right.”.
The picture Hutchinson paints is simple: 2024 ended in a painful stop, 2025 proved he could resume his career, and 2026 comes with a cleaner runway—an offseason he says he used to train and get his body right.

Def Player of the Year again? Bro just wants clicks lol.
I remember that leg injury in 2024, that was awful. If he’s back to form then yeah he should be in the conversation, but Defensive Player of the Year is usually like DBs not DEs right?? Not sure how it works anymore.
So he broke his leg in 2024 and then “productive 2025” like it’s just the contract extension fixing him…? I mean money helps but idk. Also OTAs don’t mean anything, dudes are just running routes and stretching.
I feel like the Lions always hype someone right before the season and then the award talk disappears. Defensive Player of the Year in 2026?? Okay but what about the defensive tackles and the cornerbacks, like are they just not counting them. Also “get his body right” sounds like a PR line, sorry.
