Emily Blunt says Tom Cruise yelling “Please roll”

For a movie audience, the drop ship sequence in Edge of Tomorrow looks like clean science fiction. For Emily Blunt, it was something else entirely—hot, heavy, and long enough to strip patience down to the bone.
Blunt, speaking on a recent episode of Hot Ones, recalled how the physically demanding shoot left her and Tom Cruise “extremely frustrated and in pain.” She said they were stuck in wires for longer than expected while filming the 2014 sci-fi film.
“We’re in those massive armored suits. And when you’re surrounded by Tom Cruise’s enthusiasm, it kind of bleeds in you and you feel like you can’t let him down by complaining about anything. It’s a very powerful force coming off him,” Blunt said.
That determination didn’t last forever. Blunt described the heat inside the suit and the strain of the setup itself—her suit weighing 80 pounds, while she was in a harness being lifted so that “the entire weight of my body — and 85 pounds — is on my nether regions.”
At some point, she said Cruise’s own drive began to unravel. She noticed his “enthusiasm… starting to unravel a little bit” as they were “swinging” in the air, and Cruise began to push harder, yelling, “Please roll!”
Blunt decided she’d had enough. She looked at him and said, “This f****** sucks.” Cruise replied with calm intensity, telling her, “It’s a challenge.”
The exchange stuck with her—and Blunt had already shared the same story in 2014 on The Graham Norton Show. where she sat right next to Cruise himself. On that earlier stop, Cruise didn’t miss his chance to react. “You know what?. If I start complaining, it’s on. If I start going down, it’s on,” he quipped.
After Blunt revealed what happened when she told him, “Tom! It sucks,” she said Cruise agreed to whatever she needed to say about the situation. “He went, ‘Okay!’”
Blunt’s memory makes the picture feel vivid: two stars, both pushed by the same uncomfortable rig, one wrestling with time and pain, the other refusing to stop. By the end, the frustration wasn’t erased—it was folded into the kind of momentum that lets a scene get made anyway.

Tom Cruise yelling “Please roll” sounds like he’s ordering a video game mission.
80 pounds on her nether regions?? Like why are they even doing that to people for a sci-fi movie. I get acting is hard but damn. Also Hot Ones is an odd place to talk about this lol.
So wait Emily Blunt said Tom was stuck in wires too… but I thought Cruise does his own stunts like all the time? Idk. Maybe they were both exhausted and that’s why he kept yelling “please roll” like rolling the credits? Never heard of this movie behind the scenes anyway.
This makes me mad for some reason. Like everyone keeps saying “it’s a challenge” but she’s literally 80+ pounds in a suit and then he’s getting more intense? Edge of Tomorrow was good but I don’t know if I’m buying that mutual frustration story makes it more realistic. Also Hot Ones… so she’s sweating wings and talking about harness pain, great.
