Hampton backs McDaniel: Chargers RB role set to surge
Omarion Hampton says Mike McDaniel’s arrival will be “super good” for the Chargers’ running backs after researching how McDaniel’s Miami offense generated big plays from the backfield, and after spending the offseason learning what comes next.
When Mike McDaniel landed with the Chargers, the conversation didn’t stop at Justin Herbert’s footwork.
Hampton. the team’s running back entering his second NFL season. said he noticed the same ingredient that defined McDaniel’s offenses in Miami: producing big plays out of the backfield. Hampton spent time studying what the new offensive coordinator’s system looks like. and what he found carried into his offseason work learning how it’s supposed to function for him and the rest of the group.
“All the running backs like it a lot,” Hampton said, via the team’s website. “It’s just figuring it out, the details of it. It’s going to be super good for us.”
For Hampton, the excitement is tied directly to growth. He believes the coaching change gives his development a clearer runway. not just a fresh set of calls on game day. And the point doesn’t land in a vacuum—McDaniel’s track record in Miami is the reference point Hampton built his expectations on while doing research into what to expect from the coach.
McDaniel’s arrival is also being framed by the broader outlook for the Chargers offense in 2025. The offensive line should be healthier. and tight end David Njoku is expected to add another weapon in the passing game. Still. Hampton’s tone makes one thing clear: for the running backs. he sees McDaniel’s system as the biggest reason the role could expand in ways that show up quickly.
The link between what Hampton studied and what he’s now doing in preparation is simple. He came into the offseason with an idea of how McDaniel creates backfield damage. and now he’s spent the time learning what that means for him after McDaniel has planned for him and the team’s other backs. In Hampton’s words, the next step is figuring out the details—and believing the payoff is already within reach.

So like… backfield big plays? Sounds good but also we’ve heard “next step” before lol.
I don’t even know who Omarion Hampton is but if McDaniel can do what he did in Miami then Chargers are scary. Hope Herbert stays healthy because it always comes down to injuries.
Wait I thought McDaniel was already in L.A. like last year? But anyway “producing big plays out of the backfield” means they’re gonna run more, right? Or is that just fancy talk for checkdowns??
Chargers offense 2025 sounds like: better O-line, Njoku catches everything, and the RB gets involved. But I swear every year the media says “super good” and then week 3 they can’t score. Still, I’ll take the optimism.
