Pistons emerge as Herro swing in Giannis-Miami talks

Pistons third-team – Detroit is being positioned as a key third-team facilitator if Giannis Antetokounmpo lands with the Miami Heat, with Tyler Herro heading to the Pistons. The idea sits inside an offseason that’s already been reshaped by Milwaukee’s disappointing season and orga

A blockbuster offseason swing could be taking shape in places Pistons fans didn’t necessarily expect.

With speculation intensifying around Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future. a new report suggests the Detroit Pistons could play a major role as the deal’s connective tissue. The framework described would send Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat while moving Heat guard Tyler Herro to Detroit.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that “the Detroit Pistons are emerging as a potential third team to help facilitate a trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo moving to the Miami Heat.” Stein added that “the Pistons would ultimately receive Tyler Herro in return.”

For Detroit, the appeal is clear: perimeter shooting and offensive firepower around its young core. Stein’s report says the Pistons have been exploring options on the trade market as they look to upgrade their roster this offseason. and the idea of adding Herro fits that search for scoring from the outside.

Stein also said Detroit has been rumored in deals for Kyrie Irving and Trey Murphy III, while the franchise has also been connected to Zach LaVine, Coby White and Isaiah Joe as it weighs potential additions ahead of next season.

Herro’s production is part of why he’s positioned as the prize here. The report notes that last season he averaged 20.5 points. 4.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists across 33 games. while continuing to establish himself as one of the league’s most productive perimeter scorers. Herro remains under contract through the 2026-27 season.

The Pistons’ interest also lands in the middle of a much bigger chessboard. Antetokounmpo is still under contract with Milwaukee. but trade speculation has surged after the Bucks’ disappointing season and subsequent organizational changes. including the hiring of Taylor Jenkins as head coach. Miami. meanwhile. has long been viewed as a leading contender if Antetokounmpo becomes available. with multiple reports stating the Heat have remained aggressive in their pursuit of another superstar and have maintained interest in Antetokounmpo for months.

That sets up an offseason where Detroit’s role—at least in this reported scenario—doesn’t rely on being the destination for the biggest name. It would rely on being the piece that makes the deal possible.

The Pistons are coming off a regular season that gave them room to dream. Detroit finished 60-22, secured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, and posted its highest win total since the 2005-06 campaign. But the playoffs exposed where the roster still needed sharpening. In the first round, Detroit was pushed to the brink by the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic before overcoming a 3-1 deficit. The season later ended in the Eastern Conference semifinals with a seven-game loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Between those playoff lessons and the reported push for more shooting this offseason, the Herro-to-Detroit angle feels like it lines up with what Detroit wants to fix next.

For now, whether a multi-team trade involving Antetokounmpo ultimately materializes remains uncertain. Still, Stein’s report points to Detroit as a potential key participant if the Bucks and Heat intensify trade discussions in the coming weeks.

  1. I swear every week it’s “third team” this and “framework” that. Giannis to Miami sounds fake, like he’s gonna just magically leave Milwaukee and that’s it. But if they’re sending Herro to Detroit then Milwaukee must be getting some crazy pieces right?

  2. Detroit being a “connector” doesn’t mean anything to me. Like they’re just a pawn in some salary puzzle. Also didn’t Pistons already try to get Kyrie and stuff? Seems like they just keep name-dropping players until one hits, idk.

  3. Herro to Detroit would honestly make me mad for Miami fans because they just drafted his whole vibe into existence or whatever. But I’m also confused—if Giannis goes to Miami, how do the Pistons end up with him taking up all that “connective tissue” role? The article says Herro has 20.5 points, so maybe Detroit’s like “cool we’ll take the scorer” and pretend defense will figure itself out. NBA trades are always confusing anyway.
