How New Yorkers will get STAR relief checks

STAR property – Gov. Kathy Hochul says about 2.78 million New York homeowners will share $2.1 billion in property tax relief through STAR. The relief will reach many through tax bills, while others will get checks in the mail—here’s how to check eligibility and track delivery

For many New York homeowners, the relief is arriving in the most familiar place: the mailbox or the next tax bill. Gov. Kathy Hochul said millions are set to receive $2 billion in property tax relief through the state’s school tax relief program, known as STAR.

Hochul said 2.78 million homeowners will share $2.1 billion in tax relief. That includes 474,000 homeowners in New York City and 572,000 on Long Island.

“For many homeowners, it’ll be an extra $350-600 in their pockets,” Hochul said. “But for seniors, the benefit is even bigger. Many are on fixed income. They’re not bringing in income every single paycheck anymore. And so, eligible seniors will receive between $700-1,500 in relief.”

The program is built for homeowners who meet specific requirements: home ownership, primary residency, and age and income.

Married couples can only receive a single STAR benefit, although Hochul said that changes if they are separated.

How state leaders describe the purpose is straightforward: reduce the pressure of everyday costs for families and older residents.

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said STAR is meant to help as payments begin moving. “As STAR checks begin reaching eligible New Yorkers. this assistance will help families keep more of their hard earned money and better manage everyday expenses. ” she said. She also encouraged homeowners to enroll quickly. “I encourage all eligible homeowners to enroll in the STAR Credit Direct Deposit Program to receive this important benefit quickly and securely.”.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie framed the timing as especially important as prices rise. “This $2 billion in tax relief is vital to our families and our seniors. As New Yorkers see the high cost of gas and rising prices, the STAR program will put money back into their pockets,” he said.

The practical question for homeowners is simple: will the benefit show up in the way they expect, and how can they verify it?

Hochul said most people will see the benefit in their tax bill, while others will start getting checks in the mail.

For those tracking whether a check is on the way, STAR recipients can click to track delivery or sign up for direct deposit.

State officials are also planning outreach across the state. Hochul said seminars about the STAR program will be hosted throughout New York during July, with details available through a provided link to find when one is happening near you.

Eligibility and status aren’t automatic for everyone, and the state points homeowners to the available information pages to confirm requirements and follow delivery as payments begin reaching eligible New Yorkers.

  1. Mine better be $600 minimum lol. I don’t even trust the state with checks in the mail. Says 2.78 million homeowners so hopefully I’m not one of the unlucky ones.

  2. I saw something about STAR and thought it was like a rebate for schools, but now it’s property tax relief? Confusing. Also my husband and I are “married couples” so does that mean we only get one check even if we live separately like… kinda? They should’ve explained that part better.

  3. They keep saying seniors get $700-1,500 but my grandma didn’t get anything last time she filed, like ever. This program “enroll quickly” is just code for you miss out if you blink. Also NYC and Long Island get different stuff, cool, but what about Westchester? I don’t even know where to check eligibility half the time, the website is always down.
