Hakimi’s rape case moves forward as World Cup plays on

In Foxborough, Mass., the World Cup was still moving when the legal clock kept ticking for Achraf Hakimi.

On Friday. June 19. French prosecutors confirmed that the Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain right back will stand trial for rape in France after he lost an appeal to drop the case. The allegations trace back to February 2023. when a woman accused Hakimi of assaulting her at his home in the suburbs of Paris.

Hakimi, 27, is Morocco’s captain. Hours after the confirmation of the trial, he took the field for Morocco’s second match of the World Cup against Scotland later Friday. He had also played the full match during Morocco’s opener against Brazil, a 1-1 draw.

Before Morocco’s match against Scotland, Hakimi posted a statement on social media that was originally written in French. In it. he said: “Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: ‘If you weren’t famous. there never would have been a case.’ I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made. Today. a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family. my life. and above all. the truth. Sometimes I feel like I’ve become an easy target. I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I’m looking forward to it. Finally, I will be able to speak.”.

No trial date has been set yet.

For Hakimi. the tension is immediate and human: the confirmation of a trial in France comes while he continues to appear in matches on the world stage—one begun in a draw against Brazil. another played in full ahead of Morocco’s showdown with Scotland. The facts are stark on both fronts, but the schedule forces them into the same frame.

  1. I read “rape case moves forward” and instantly thought they dropped it and now it’s back?? People said something about appeal and now trial. Wild timing though with Scotland match right after.

  2. Not to be that person but the article says he wrote something about being an “easy target” if he wasn’t famous, like??? That’s exactly why famous people always get away with stuff. But idk maybe he’s innocent. Just feels messy.

  3. Bro I’m confused, is the trial in France or is it somehow connected to the World Cup stuff in Foxborough? Also he played full against Brazil but trial date not set yet… so they’re basically letting him keep playing until court stuff happens? That seems wrong either way.
