For a historic Ohio festival that was supposed to be filled with music and crowds, Saturday night turned into something else fast.

Around 5:30 p.m. near the Old West End Festival in Toledo. a pair of gunmen began firing while hundreds of people—including children—were attending. Toledo Police Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan said. The deputy chief said the gunmen were likely “probably” shooting at each other as the bullets started flying.

Authorities said at least 12 people were shot. Two of the victims are in critical condition. The conditions of the other victims were not released.

Police believe there may have been multiple shooters, but as of Saturday night there were no suspects in custody.

After the shooting, the assailants fled the scene. Toledo Police Lieutenant Dan Gerken said the victims ranged in age from 14 to 61, with most in their early 20s.

Gerken did not provide a motive, saying the investigation is still in its early stages. Detectives are interviewing victims and witnesses and collecting video evidence.

Officials also said it’s unclear whether any of the festival attendees were hit by gunfire.

The festival itself didn’t last the day. The two-day event was canceled for Sunday, with organizers saying in a statement that it would not be compassionate or responsible to continue with the event.
