Caitlin Clark admits fouling as Fever fall

Caitlin Clark refused to make excuses after the Indiana Fever were beaten 83-75 by the New York Liberty, admitting the team’s defense helped create 21 Breanna Stewart free throws that swung the game.

Indiana walked into Saturday night knowing it needed to stay disciplined. It left with a number it couldn’t ignore: New York went to the free throw line 40 times, while the Fever managed just 15 trips.

In an 83-75 loss to the Liberty, Breanna Stewart turned that imbalance into a personal highlight reel. She scored 30 points with eight rebounds, two assists, and four steals against Indiana—and 18 of those 30 points came from 21 trips to the free throw line.

Caitlin Clark didn’t dress it up after the defeat. When asked about what went wrong, she kept it simple. “We fouled,” Clark said, per ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. “Honestly, we guarded Stewie pretty well, and we guarded them pretty well from the 3-point line. It’s just when you give somebody 21 free throws, it makes things really difficult.”.

The confession landed because the game stayed tight until the fouls started to decide it. New York’s trips to the charity stripe—40 attempts in total—came as the Fever’s foul trouble grew. Stewart was the clearest example. converting pressure into points every time Indiana’s defense ended up on the wrong side of contact.

Indiana’s offense still fought to keep pace. Clark finished with 10 points. seven rebounds. and nine assists in 34 minutes. a stat line that showed she was busy all night even as the scoring burden shifted. Kelsey Mitchell added 21 points, and Monique Billings scored 15, keeping the Fever from disappearing as the Liberty added free throws.

But the gap in trips to the line told the story of why it mattered. When one superstar can turn 21 free throw attempts into 18 made-point opportunities, it forces a team to chase—and on this night Indiana couldn’t close the distance.

The loss leaves the Fever at 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in Commissioner’s Cup games. For Indiana, the immediate task is simple: start stacking wins, because the Commissioner’s Cup path won’t stay open forever.

Next up, the Fever will hit the road for a game against the Mystics on June 8th at 7PM ET, with head coach Stephanie White tasked with rallying the troops after a defeat that was as much about discipline as it was about talent.
