By Monday afternoon, Davie, Florida police had already told a reporter that the investigation into an incident at New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith’s home was closed. Ninety minutes later, that answer had reversed.

The Town of Davie Police Department said it responded to an incident at Smith’s home, but it initially indicated no arrests were made. In an email dated Monday, June 22, a Davie Police spokesperson said: “This investigation is closed.” The message was sent at 4:56 p.m. ET.

Then, just over 90 minutes later, a different spokesperson stepped in and said detectives were taking another look. In a statement delivered at 6:29 p.m. ET. the second spokesperson said: “We were informed earlier this evening. that during review. it was determined that this case is being further investigated by a detective.” The spokesperson added that the investigation is “active” and that no additional information could be released at this time.

They also said they could not explain why the department had changed course, or who decided the incident required further investigation. Police did say an incident report would be available once the detectives’ investigation is closed and approved for release.

The reopened probe centers on an incident that occurred at Smith’s home over the weekend, after a woman posted social media videos alleging that Smith assaulted her. The videos show the confrontation unfolding outside his home and in his driveway.

In one of three Instagram videos. the woman films Smith as he walks back toward the house and says. “Geno just beat my (expletive).” Smith tells her to “stay away from my family” before re-entering his home. The woman continues filming as she runs down the quarterback’s driveway and into the street, screaming for help. After turning the camera. she shows Smith outside again. standing in the driveway next to a car. and Smith tells her to leave his neighborhood.

A second video captures the woman confronting Smith at the door of a car that she says is hers. In the video. the 35-year-old quarterback opens the door and climbs into the front seat before appearing to grab a handbag. The caption on the video reads: “Throwing my purses out and stealing my money out my car.”.

A third video shows Smith speaking to three police officers outside the front door of his home. The caption reads: “Charges, PRESSED!”

Neither Smith nor the Jets have commented on the incident.

What changed Monday wasn’t just language—it was timing. Police first said the case was closed after responding to an incident at Smith’s home without making arrests. then reopened it after a review determined a detective would further investigate. leaving the public with fewer details and more uncertainty about what comes next.
