Fumito Ueda’s next game now has a name you can say out loud: gen ATLAS.
At Summer Game Fest. Ueda’s team unveiled the official title and released a new trailer. putting longtime fans back in the familiar waiting game—this time with no release date or even a release window offered. The project was previously known as “Project Robot. ” and it’s the first game from genDESIGN. the studio Ueda formed after leaving Sony during the completion of The Last Guardian and after the later closure of Japan Studio.
The game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X & S, and PC via the Epic Store. It’s described as a “single-player, open-world, action-adventure,” a pitch that matches the emotional pace and scale fans have come to associate with Ueda’s earlier work on Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
The setting is where gen ATLAS immediately starts to feel like a continuation of that world. A press release says: “Without knowing why. you awaken on an abandoned planet.” From there. the description leans into quiet. strange vastness—“a vast. silent world” where “colossal structures stretch over endless plains. ” alongside “deserted facilities” and “an ever-changing sea.” It adds that the planet’s surface is littered with “the remnants of some grand design.”.
As the player travels deeper. the trailer’s central promise is spelled out in the language of wonder and dread: “a colossal robot awaits.” The release describes how the robot’s “overwhelming power opens paths to places once beyond reach. ” changing “your conception of the world.” It also depicts a long-drifting cycle of time. where “the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more.”.
Ueda’s pitch for gen ATLAS doesn’t lean on mechanics. He speaks directly to the people who have been waiting—some for years, some for longer. “The team and I are grateful to all the fans who’ve been eager to learn more about our game. ” Ueda said. “Their passion and enthusiasm has always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.”.
There’s another shift that lands as quietly as the game’s atmosphere: this will be the first Ueda game that is not exclusive to PlayStation. After his departure from Sony during the completion of The Last Guardian. and after Japan Studio closed years later. gen ATLAS is set to be playable across platforms. including Xbox and PC—an expansion that will matter to players who have followed Ueda but never owned the console he previously built his releases around.
Still, the biggest question right now is the same one fans have faced before: how long will gen ATLAS take. No release date or window has been given as of now. For players who have been waiting on The Last Guardian. the situation will feel painfully familiar; that PS4 exclusive famously took nine years to make. and disappeared and reappeared during its long development. The release is already a decade old now. leaving fans hoping gen ATLAS won’t stretch into the same kind of drawn-out timeline.
