Why FIFA’s investor proposal sparked global outrage
FIFA’s proposal to invite private investors through FIFA Forward Enterprise faces fierce opposition and concerns over transparency and motives.
FIFA will conduct the draw for the 2027 Women’s World Cup at a venue already full of drawings — and paintings and sculpture.
The draw will take place Dec. 11 at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The museum also has served as host to other international events, including the 2024 G20 Summit.
“Football has often been described as a universal language. In Brazil, it’s also an art form,” Jill Ellis, the former U.S. women’s national team coach who now serves as FIFA’s Chief Football Officer, said in a news release. “Every pass can become a brushstroke, every movement a moment of inspiration and every goal a masterpiece.
“The FIFA Women’s World Cup showcases the very best players in the world, and there’s no better place to begin drawing their paths through the tournament in Brazil than a venue that celebrates creativity and human expression.”
Most teams will have qualified for the tournament by the time the draw is conducted, with Concacaf qualification taking place Nov. 27-Dec. 5 and European teams wrapping qualification around the same date.
Three teams will book their places through the inter-confederation tournament in February 2027.
FIFA announced the full match calendar last week, with the eight host cities all hosting a minimum of seven matches. After the draw in December, fans will be able to plan which matches they want to see or learn where their team will play.
