Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Goes Free

After a rocky box-office run, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is streaming for free on Pluto this month—letting new viewers jump into Chris Pine’s charming thief quest and a cast packed with recognizable favorites.

The quickest way to understand why Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves didn’t fade away after the credits isn’t the box office—it’s the couch. Because this month, the 2023 fantasy adventure is streaming for free on Pluto, giving viewers a chance to catch up without paying a cent.

The film comes from an already-loved tabletop world. built around a big. breezy promise: take a ragtag crew. send them after a lost relic. and watch the consequences turn a “simple job” into something far messier and more magical. At the center is Edgin Darvis. played by Chris Pine. a charming thief with a plan—and friends whose instincts are just as quick as their chaos.

Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga Kilgore, while Regé-Jean Page is Xenk Yendar. Justice Smith appears as Simon Aumar, and Sophia Lillis—known from It—takes on Doric. Hugh Grant (Paddington 2) is Forge Fitzwilliam, Daisy Head is Sofina, and Chloe Coleman (My Spy) is Kira Darvis. It’s an ensemble that leans into the game’s love for personality, misdirection, and sudden turns.

The movie’s on-screen spirit, though, didn’t translate into financial momentum. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a flop in terms of financial return: it opened strongly with about $37–38.5 million domestically and topped the box office in its first weekend. beating John Wick: Chapter 4 in North America. But the budget was the problem. The film reportedly cost around $150 million and earned $208 million worldwide. Once marketing and distribution costs are factored in, the numbers point to disaster.

That contradiction—bright. funny. and fan-friendly on one side. underperforming in theaters on the other—is where the story gets interesting. Critically, the reaction landed much closer to a win. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus calls it an “infectiously good-spirited comedy with a solid emotional core. ” and the film sits in the low 90s with critics.

In one highly positive review. Collider’s Carly Lane gave the film a B+. praising directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night). Lane also highlighted their screenplay work: Goldstein and Daley co-wrote the script alongside Michael Gilio. with an emphasis on how the filmmakers let their affection for the game shine through. Her review also praised the performances of the stars, particularly Page.

For anyone who missed it—or never got around to it—Pluto’s free streaming run this month turns a complicated theatrical story into a simple one: press play, meet the crew, and see why so many viewers and critics found something genuinely likable inside the chaos.

  1. Free on Pluto?? I didn’t even know that was a thing. Guess I’m watching instead of paying for more nonsense.

  2. It flopped but it’s still getting streaming for free so that’s kinda funny. Like if it was that bad wouldn’t they not put it on Pluto? Chris Pine charm save lives or whatever.

  3. I’m confused though… it says it cost 150 million but made 208 worldwide. That sounds like a profit to me? Unless I’m missing the part where they literally mean the couch is the box office now lol. Also John Wick beat it? I feel like John Wick always wins somehow.

  4. Rotten Tomatoes in the low 90s and yet it “lost” money… money math is wild. I swear it’s because streaming releases happen too late now. Also I only recognize Hugh Grant from Paddington 2 so I’m like wait he’s in this too? Might try it, but I’ll probably watch 20 minutes and decide it’s just like the game (which I never even play).
