Roberts flips Chargers fandom to Rams after Garrett

The NFL world is still spinning after the Los Angeles Rams landed Myles Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, from the Cleveland Browns—so much so that even Dodgers manager Dave Roberts couldn’t keep his usual football loyalties.

Garrett didn’t just arrive in a trade package; he also showed up in Dodgers lore. Roberts said Garrett is now a must-see presence. especially after Garrett threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a recent Dodgers game. And when Roberts talked about what comes next. it was clear he’s fully buying in to Los Angeles football’s new centerpiece.

“I’m excited to see him throw out the first pitch and in a Rams uniform,” Roberts said via Dodgers Nation on X.

The defensive star’s impact was part of the excitement, too. “He’s top of the food chain, it’s going to make a good defense even better,” Roberts added.

For years, Roberts has been tied to the Chargers. Now, he’s drawing a line in the sand. “I used to be a Chargers fan but now it’s sensitive up here,” Roberts said.

The reason the switch feels so immediate is the trade itself. In return for Garrett, the Rams sent third-year edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick to the Browns.

That haul underscores what the Rams are aiming for: championship speed. The Rams are now described as “the prohibitive favorites to win the Super Bowl,” with another championship in the city of Los Angeles the latest chapter—after the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series last fall.

For Garrett, the message after the acquisition was just as direct as Roberts’ reaction. Shortly after the trade, Garrett made it clear that his goal is to help the Rams win the Super Bowl again, the team’s most recent title coming in 2022.

In his introductory press conference, Garrett said via Yardbarker, “I see a position to solidify myself here as well among the very greats.”

He added, “I still have plenty of great years in front of me. And being able to cement that legacy not only as a football city here in L.A. but as an individual in winning DPOY and a Super Bowl or more. those things are definitely pressing on my mind. and I have a definite bit of urgency to do it and do it right away.”.

Put together, Garrett’s stakes—and the Rams’ price—help explain why Roberts’ fandom didn’t last through the week. When a player of Garrett’s status lands in your city and immediately turns into a visible presence at your own ballpark. the football switch doesn’t feel like a debate. It feels like the next step.

For now, Roberts has already made his choice: Chargers history, Rams reality.

  1. Okay but how is Dave Roberts switching to Rams like it’s just baseball news. Doesn’t he have a whole thing for the Chargers? Also “top of the food chain” is a weird quote, like he’s a shark.

  2. Wait the article says Garrett threw out the first pitch at a Dodgers game, so that’s basically Dodgers legend now right? That means the Dodgers are kinda involved in the Rams trade?? I swear sports media just cross-wires everything.

  3. I don’t get it, Dave Roberts is a Dodgers manager not an NFL coach lol. But sure, he’s “excited to see him throw out the first pitch” like that proves they’ll win. The Rams have “prohibitive favorites”??? Didn’t they say that about someone else last year and then boom, injured or whatever.
