Dodgers unload nine in first, rattle Angels early

Dodgers score – The Los Angeles Dodgers erupted for nine runs in the first inning on Saturday, June 6 at Dodger Stadium, jump-started by Shohei Ohtani’s early power against his former organization. The Angels answered with a quick 1-0 lead in the top half, but Los Angeles sur

Dodger Stadium didn’t wait for the second inning. It flinched, then flooded, as the Los Angeles Dodgers put nine runs on the board in the first frame against their in-state rivals, the Los Angeles Angels, on Saturday, June 6.

The start had the snap of a statement. Shohei Ohtani. facing the team he spent the first six years of his career with. set the tone in the top of the first. After Andy Pages hit a two-run home run that traveled 394 feet to left field. the Dodgers struck again as Ohtani added a two-run home run of his own—406 feet to center field. Alex Freeland scored on the play. and Los Angeles carried a commanding 9-1 lead into the top of the second inning.

That wasn’t the end of the damage. Ryan Ward pushed the score further with a double to center that brought in Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts to score. Max Muncy was moved to third, and he stayed in play just long enough for the inning to keep rolling. Freeland grounded into a fielder’s choice to the Angels’ shortstop. Zach Neto. and Muncy was brought in after that sequence. Ward then managed to score on an error. and Dalton Rushing scored after another throwing error by Neto—more defensive missteps piling onto an Angels team that had only just begun to feel the weight of the inning.

The early run for the Angels came first, before the Dodgers took control. After all, the Angels held an initial 1-0 lead at the top of the inning thanks to Oswald Peraza’s triple to center, which brought in Wade Meckler to score.

Even as the game’s scoring swung hard to Los Angeles. the evening carried outside-story moments in the same orbit of sports spectacle. Before first pitch, Myles Garrett threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Dodgers. Garrett was traded to the Los Angeles Rams last week after spending the first nine years of his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. He was later named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year after recording an NFL single-season record 23 sacks during the 2025 season.

On the mound, Blake Treinen also produced a first-inning highlight—catching Andy Pages’ home run while standing in the bullpen.

The sequence of early swings told a clear story without needing extra drama: the Angels’ 1-0 lead arrived in the opening stretch, then Dodgers bats turned that lead into a 9-1 advantage almost immediately, turning a single inning into a full takeover.

As the scoreboard reflected the momentum, another live-TV surprise played out beyond baseball’s diamond at the same time—MLB player Lars Nootbaar was surprised by his mom during a live interview, with tears flowing afterward when the Cardinals outfielder realized what was happening on screen.

  1. I thought Ohtani was always good but facing his former team and hitting 2 homers?? That’s gotta feel illegal. Also the Angels scored first so maybe they were fine for like 10 minutes.

  2. Wait, so the Angels scored in the top of the first and then Dodgers had 9 in the second inning…? I’m kinda lost, because the article says “nine in the first” but then it’s like second frame. Either way Dodgers always do this.

  3. Freeland double, then errors, then throwing errors by Neto… ok so it wasn’t even just bats, it was defense falling apart. And everyone keeps saying it’s “in-state rivals” like that matters, but I guess when you’re losing by 9 immediately it matters. Feel bad for the Angels though, that inning sounded brutal.
