Denise Richards marks 15th birthday amid Eloise care

Denise Richards says parenting her adopted daughter, Eloise Joni Richards, has grown harder as Eloise—who has Monosomy 8p—gets older, sharing details of her developmental challenges on the teen’s 15th birthday.
Denise Richards looked straight at the calendar on Sunday, May 24, and the date carried a shock of its own.
In an Instagram post marking Eloise Joni Richards’ 15th birthday. the actress wrote. “I can’t believe 15 [years] old already.” The post paired her words with a compilation video of Eloise and opened the door to how daily life can tighten around a parent when the needs are constant and the timeline is never fully predictable.
“Having a special-needs child in a lot of ways gets more challenging,” Richards, 55, wrote, “with me worrying more about her future the older she gets.”
Richards adopted Eloise Joni in a domestic adoption while she was single in June 2011. The child’s middle name honors Richards’ deceased mother, who died of cancer in 2007. Richards has also said she shares daughters Sami and Lola Sheen with ex-husband and fellow actor Charlie Sheen.
Eloise’s diagnosis is Monosomy 8p. a rare chromosomal disorder caused by deletion—also called monosomy—of a portion of the eighth chromosome. The National Organization for Rare Disorders describes it as a condition where symptoms can vary. but common characteristics include growth deficiency. intellectual disability. malformations of the skull and facial region. and heart abnormalities.
Richards first publicly detailed Eloise’s diagnosis in a 2019 interview with People magazine, when Eloise was 7 years old. At the time, she described how Eloise “wasn’t able to sit up on her own for a very long time” and “didn’t start walking until she was 2, and that was with physical therapy.”
The actress told People the chromosomal disorder had led to “a lot of developmental delays. ” adding that Eloise could only say “a handful of words.” Richards also described a shifting picture of what Eloise understands from moment to moment: “There are times when she feels like her age in understanding. and then other times where it feels she’s emotionally 3 years old.” She said. “It’s been challenging. I’m learning every day because they don’t really have a road map for her particular case.”.
In Sunday’s post, Richards turned from the harder edges of care to the language she uses to steady herself.
“My mom always had said. a special-needs child is an angel from God and Eloise is the biggest angel with the biggest selfless heart. ” she wrote. “I’m so proud of her strength and kindness. I’m so grateful for her older sisters. my friends who are my family and my dad. who is the best grandpa [and] father figure for Eloise.”.
The same themes—attention. awareness. and the need for family support—were reflected in an interview Richards gave to People last February. She said Eloise is “primarily considered nonverbal. ” but “very observant [and] understands everything.” Richards added. “Sometimes when the girls go at each other. she just raises her eyebrows and then they laugh and can get past whatever stupid thing they’re fighting about.”.
Taken together, Richards’ updates trace a through-line that doesn’t flatten Eloise into a diagnosis. The disorder—Monosomy 8p—comes with wide-ranging challenges. and Richards keeps returning to what it means for a parent in real time: the delays described at age 7. the shifting understanding she’s lived through. and the growing worry she feels as Eloise turns 15.
A birthday post can be a celebration. In Richards’ case, it’s also a reminder that care is ongoing—and that for families navigating rare conditions, “what comes next” can be the hardest part to plan.
