Vrabel dodges future absences as draft drama lingers

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel told reporters he can’t promise whether he’ll miss any more offseason activities, pointing to the unknown nature of what could come up. Speaking for the first time since he missed the third day of the 2026 draft, Vrabel stayed focuse

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel walked into the media room on Wednesday with one clear message: he’ll be there today, and after that, the next steps are impossible to pin down.

For the first time since a pair of brief appearances at the height of the controversy that prompted him to miss the third day of the 2026 draft. Vrabel fielded questions in an 18-minute. 35-second press conference. One of the central beats was whether the offseason could bring more absences tied to the situation that drove him away for rounds four through seven.

At the 9:39 mark of the session. he was asked directly if he anticipates missing any more football activities for the rest of the offseason program. Vrabel’s answer came with uncertainty built in. “I mean. I can only tell you I’m gonna be there today. and I can’t tell you anything other than I’m gonna be out there today in full force. ” he said. “And I mean that because, you know, who knows what’s gonna come up?. I’m not even — you know, anything could happen. And so I’m gonna focus on today. But in the excitement that we’ve had and that we’ve built so far. and the conditioning that we’ve tried to incorporate into our practices and the weightlifting and all the things that are critical.”.

That “who knows” moment landed in the middle of a press conference that repeatedly circled back to the here-and-now: spring routines, conditioning work, and teaching the scheme.

Vrabel also faced questions about the off-field issues that surrounded him and the distraction the scandal created. “We all have to deal with things, you know, outside of here,” he said. “And my focus — and obviously. the excitement that I have for coaching — is what is most important right now. and this is a great opportunity. the spring. we don’t have to worry about opponents. We don’t have to worry about, you know, our schedule is pretty much the same.”.

He described the spring as a steady grind for players, with each day taking on a familiar feel. “The players, it has a routine, and each and every day in the spring is similar. But it’s just about teaching. It’s about teaching these guys the scheme.”

Vrabel said the staff is looking at enhancements both offensively and defensively and in special teams—things the team did well before. with the need to dress them up or modify them slightly. “So that’s what the spring’s time is about. and that’s really all we know. is being able to coach these guys and to teach them. help them. help them do their job. This is the time in the spring where they can focus on. you know. not only conditioning but. you know. all the details that are gonna help them. So that’s really all I know, and that’s really all I want to be able to do.”.

When pressed on the personal side, Vrabel referenced the balance between family and football. Asked: “When we spoke to you last you were talking about the balance of family and football. How would you describe how that process has been going?” he responded, “Really good. I think that that’s — again, I appreciate — my family is great. I love [my wife] Jen. I love the boys. I love. you know. my personal friends. and then. you know. this spring is focused on. really. the coaching staff. the players. more importantly. than the coaching staff. but I just. you know. seeing the coaches in the second year. how smooth the conversations are. you know. ‘Hey. we love this play. how do we make it better?’”.

As the session continued, Vrabel returned to the structure of the offseason, with a lengthy explanation of the differences between spring practice and training camp.

The exchange with the media grew mildly contentious when he was asked about the team’s response to him based on his “daily” reading of the room. Vrabel pushed back. “Well, not every day,” he said. “Some of your sources probably aren’t as good. I don’t have a team meeting every day in the spring.”

For most of the press conference, the tone read as familiar—Vrabel sounded like the coach he’s always been. But the situation that became the biggest story in the NFL and then lingered for weeks remains unresolved in the background.

The drip-drip of news regarding Vrabel’s relationship with reporter Dianna Russini has slowed dramatically in recent weeks. but one development still sits ahead. Russini could tell her story in whatever format she chooses. and depending on what she says and when she says it. the next complication for Vrabel could arrive.

For now. Vrabel is steering the conversation back to what’s directly in front of him—today’s work. the routine of spring. and the details that help players do their jobs. The larger question is whether the off-field uncertainty will stay contained. or whether “what’s gonna come up” finally breaks the spell of normal offseason football.

  1. So he missed day 3 and now he’s like “can’t promise” about the rest?? That’s kinda wild. Players need consistency not this press conference chaos.

  2. I’m confused, I thought he was already done with whatever drama from the draft. Like is it contract stuff or like… team rules? The way they write it is so messed up, half the time it sounds like he’s avoiding the question.

  3. This is why I don’t trust anything the coach says anymore. One day he shows up, next day he’s gone, and then it’s all “conditioning and weightlifting” like that fixes it. If there’s an off-field issue, just say what it is instead of acting like “anything could happen.”
