Delta jet aborts Boston landing after runway conflict prompts alert

A Delta flight aborted its landing at Boston Logan after receiving an onboard traffic conflict alert when another plane departed from an intersecting runway. The FAA is investigating the near miss, and Delta says the crew executed a safe, routine go-around and

The go-around happened fast—so fast that passengers may have felt the plane surge upward and then settle back down. For Delta Air Lines Flight 2351, the decision came after an alert during the approach into Boston Logan International Airport on Saturday, June 20.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating a near miss at the airport. In a statement. the agency said the Delta flight from Dallas was forced to abort its landing because another aircraft was departing from an intersecting runway. The FAA said the event occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time.

Delta pilots responded with a “go-around,” a maneuver the FAA described as safe and routine—performed at the discretion of pilots. The agency emphasized that crews use it when they determine the approach cannot be completed safely.

FlightRadar24 data suggests the other aircraft may have been American Airlines flight 3161, which was departing Boston for Charlotte, North Carolina around the same time DL2351 was preparing to land. Neither American Airlines nor the FAA confirmed the identity or details of the other plane involved.

Delta said the crew followed established procedures and coordinated with Air Traffic Control. executed the go-around on approach into Boston-Logan. and then landed safely. In its statement, the airline added that the pilots received an alert from an onboard traffic conflict monitoring system. Delta also said pilots receive rigorous training to respond to such alerts.

A pattern of “close calls” can worry aviation safety experts because frequency matters, not just outcomes. The FAA previously told the public it is working to become more proactive about preventing incidents. even though go-arounds themselves are a normal part of aviation when conditions require a different plan.

The situation at Boston this month echoes a 2023 incident involving JetBlue. In that earlier case, a JetBlue plane was landing on a runway that intersected one where a private jet was beginning its takeoff roll, and the private jet did not have takeoff clearance.

As the investigation continues. the central question is how closely the airport’s runway movements aligned at the exact moment DL2351 was coming in—and whether that timing. combined with what pilots saw and what onboard systems detected. offers a clear lesson for preventing similar runway conflicts in the future.
