PHILADELPHIA — The rain arrived early at Lincoln Financial Field. pushing fans into shelter as a severe thunderstorm approached and the stadium prepared for what was still billed as a 5:00 p.m. ET kickoff window. Inside. the crowd kept moving—France supporters letting out their noise as the lineup announcements began. Iraq’s contingent arriving ready for a match that carries real history and real pressure.

This is the second match of the group in Philadelphia. the first-ever international meeting between the two countries in World Cup play. France enters Monday after overcoming a sluggish first half to beat Senegal in its 2026 World Cup opener. finishing 3-1. and signaling that a tournament favorite may be even sharper than in prior versions of the competition.

Kylian Mbappé set the tone in France’s opening match with two goals, bringing his World Cup total to 13. At media availability on Sunday. Mbappé—who is also tied for the fourth most World Cup goals scored with 14—spoke about the best player question when asked to compare himself with Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane.

“The best of the four players?. Lionel Messi,” Mbappé said. “It’s clear. He’s the best in the world with Cristiano (Ronaldo), it’s clear. He’s shown during 15 years that he has an amazing quality. Me. I try to do what I can do. I show my quality on the biggest stage. helping my team to win another World Cup.”.

France’s statement of intent has not been limited to individual brilliance. Manager Didier Deschamps made three changes to the lineup for France vs. Iraq—one each in defense, midfield and forward line. Lucas Digne replaces Theo Hernandez at left back. Manu Kone comes into the center of the pitch for Aurélien Tchouaméni. Bradley Barcola, who scored against Senegal, starts on the left wing in place of Desiree Doue.

The tactical plan, at least on paper, keeps France’s attacking identity intact. Kone and Adrien Rabiot will form a two-man partnership in the holding midfield. giving freedom to the four forwards—Bradley Barcola. Michael Olise. Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé—to interchange. France’s goalkeeper is Mike Maignan. and the full French starting XI is listed as: Lucas Digne. Dayot Upamecano. William Saliba. Jules Kounde; Adrien Rabiot. Manu Kone. Ousmane Dembélé; Bradley Barcola. Kylian Mbappé. Michael Olise.

For Iraq. this match is its second-ever World Cup appearance and the first time the team has reached soccer’s biggest stage since 1986. The Iraq lineup is: goalkeeper Ahmed Basil; defenders Hussein Ali. Zaid Tahseen. Akam Hashim. Merchas Doski; midfielders Ibrahim Bayesh. Amir Al-Ammari. Zidane Iqbal. Zaid Ismael; forwards Ahmed Qasem and Aymen Hussein.

Iraq arrives still searching for its first-ever World Cup win, and the drought has teeth: the team has been winless in its previous four World Cup matches, including a 4-1 loss to Norway on June 16. In the latest FIFA rankings, France is No. 2 and Iraq is No. 61.

As Group I play began, the standings set up an immediate reality check for both sides. Entering Monday’s set of games, goal differential in parentheses shows: Norway 1-0-0 (3) – 3 points; France 1-0-0 (2) – 3 points; Senegal 0-0-1 (-2) – 0 points; Iraq 0-0-1 (-3) – 0 points.

Even with all the numbers and history. the match’s earliest moments have a physical feel—weather. tempo. and crowd noise. The first report from the field noted that France struggled to find spaces in the low block used by Iraq through the first 35 minutes. with the ball pushed wide and crosses not yet landing cleanly. The downside for Iraq was stark: it had not registered a shot attempt and had only one corner at that point.

When the match’s turning point came, it arrived quickly. France took the lead in the 14th minute on the game’s only shot on goal of the match. Mbappé finished a deadly left-footed strike into the far corner after Michael Olise passed back to him at the top of the box. The goal was Mbappé’s 15th World Cup goal and his third of the tournament.

France controlled possession early in the first half, but the Iraq defense held firm enough to limit “significant chances,” with calm defending of crosses in the box. Still, Iraq could not maintain the ball and opted to play long toward its forward line.

France’s early pattern against Iraq grew from adjustments that were already tested in the tournament opener. Against Senegal. the shift helped jump-start the attack. and it continued early against Iraq: Michael Olise. normally a right winger. occupied the middle of the field while Ousmane Dembélé played on the right.

Discipline and momentum followed. Mbappé found space in the midfield and was taken down by Amir Al-Ammari for the first yellow card of the match in the sixth minute. Manu Kone nearly scored with the first shot of the game in the second minute. receiving a ball off an Iraq clearance. but his left-footed strike went wide to the far post. A minute later, an Olise through ball to Bradley Barcola was deflected by an Iraq defender.

At halftime, the match had a different rhythm: Iraq’s possession sat at 33% during the first half, and the conversation on the field turned to what could change after a substitution. Aymen Hussein was withdrawn for Ali Al-Hamadi at the striker position.

The halftime picture carried into the next phase in Philadelphia, where fans broke out in-stadium celebration with France leading 1-0, and with Iraq still largely absorbing possession and momentum. The storm warnings were real, but on the pitch France’s control felt even more so.

France’s fans weren’t only cheering the game itself. The matchup had been drawing dueling fan bases on the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Rocky Steps. where France and Iraq supporters confronted the moment “in a friendly. patriotic manner.” The city’s World Cup spotlight also extends beyond the stadium. and for many. the choice of destination is part of the story.

For players, the stakes show up differently. Mbappé’s tournament trajectory is already entrenched: he entered this year’s World Cup with 12 goals. then added two in France’s opening win against Belgium to tie Gerd Muller for fourth all-time World Cup goals. France’s World Cup pedigree also frames expectations; the team finished as runners-up to Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Across 73 World Cup games, France has a 39-14-20 record.

The path to what comes next in Group I is straightforward in one way and complicated in another. France is on one win, and Iraq is on one loss. Kickoff is set for Monday at Lincoln Financial Field. with referee Drew Fischer assigned to the match between France and Iraq. The game is airing on Fox, with additional streaming options on Fubo or the Fox One App. Spanish language broadcasts are available on Telemundo and Peacock.

In the stands, the weather may decide how comfortable fans feel as the match progresses. But the football story arriving at Lincoln Financial Field is clear: France’s pressing. the way Iraq has to defend in low space. and the way Mbappé has already turned early chances into scoreboard pressure—all while rain and thunder threaten to change the texture of the night.

  1. Storms always mess up the games but they still acted like 5pm was happening for real. France better not get complacent just cuz they’re “pressing” Iraq.

  2. Isn’t Iraq like… winless the last four matches? So how are they even in Group I. Sounds like France’s doing what they do anyway, just run it up, and then lightning steals the show lol.

  3. I don’t even get why “France presses Iraq” is the headline like it’s a politician thing. I just saw Mbappé did early stuff vs Senegal, so I’m assuming they’ll win easy and the storm was just background. Also Lincoln Financial Field can’t handle weather?? I’ve been there once and it was chaos.
