David Harbour didn’t step into the spotlight to relitigate his marriage—he just addressed Lily Allen’s most punishing work yet, the West End Girl breakup album, and then carefully pulled back.

Allen released the record last October. West End Girl is described as raw and brutal. inspired by the demise of her marriage to the Stranger Things actor. The album also appears to confirm long-running rumors about their relationship: that Harbour convinced her to start an open relationship after becoming jealous of her newfound success in acting. then later broke the rules and had a long-term affair.

Harbour previously did not confirm or deny those allegations. He also signaled he doesn’t intend to do so now. Speaking in an interview with Variety on Wednesday, he called the situation “weird,” while making clear he respects Allen for what she made from her experience.

“It was weird. I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that.”

But when the conversation moved toward his own side of the story, Harbour refused to open the door. He said he couldn’t say much more because it remains private life—an idea that didn’t come with any softness.

“I can’t really say that much more because it’s my private life. In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won’t speak about that.”

He didn’t offer an apology, either. The article notes he had even declined to publicly apologize for the “pain” he caused Allen. describing the split as “character development” and moving forward. In this Wednesday interview. when the interviewer gave him another opportunity to shut down any claims Allen made through the album. Harbour kept refusing to play along—while still offering one perspective.

“Stories are complex, and that’s why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn’t my experience. My ability to use my experience comes through in the creation of ‘DTF.’ I want to make things that make people feel safer. My particular talent is in allowing people to feel like they’re not alone.”.

That framing lands differently from what Allen put on record. While Harbour said the stories weren’t his experience. he pointed to DTF—his own creative work—as the outlet where his personal approach shows up. He also centered the outcome he wants from his art: making people feel safer and less alone.

In the end. the tension stays where it began: Allen turned the breakdown into songs. including details that effectively echo the rumors about their marriage. and Harbour is acknowledging the act of art-making—without confirming what he believes or what happened. For now, he’s choosing distance over disclosure, and privacy over public reckoning.
