Carley Fortune Pops Up in Every Year After Finale

Carley Fortune, author of Every Summer After—the Prime Video series’ source—appears in the season one finale of Every Year After, dancing with star Sadie Soverall in a scene suggested by co-creator Amy B Harris.

Every Year After’s season one finale doesn’t just wrap up a story—it brings the author of the book behind it into the world on screen.

Carley Fortune, who penned Every Summer After, makes a special cameo in the new Prime Video series. Her appearance lands in the season one finale. and it comes with a personal spark: it was suggested by series co-creator and showrunner Amy B Harris while Fortune was watching the show’s cast and crew film.

Fortune shared with People that she and Harris were watching them film when the moment fell into place. “Amy and I were watching them film. and it was a scene at Sue’s celebration of life. after the funeral. ” the author said. “Everybody’s at the Tavern gathered around. and Amy turned to me. and she was like. ‘You should be in there.’”.

In the episode, viewers can spot Fortune dancing alongside Sadie Soverall, who plays Percy Fraser. Fortune described the beat as something uniquely fitting for the cameo, saying, “That was pretty cool. I loved how the cameo played out with Sadie and I dancing. which was a move of Sadie‘s making… it was really. really special.”.

The cameo also sits inside a broader transformation for Fortune herself. While Barry’s Bay is a real place in Ontario. Canada. the series was filmed on Bowen Island in Vancouver. British Columbia. Fortune said seeing “Barry’s Bay, their Barry’s Bay” on her first set visit was a big deal. “The first day I went to the set and seeing Barry’s Bay. their Barry’s Bay. was a pretty big deal for me. because I grew up in [the real] Barry’s Bay. ” she said. She added that the production brought to life settings from the book. including Steadmans. which is described as a real store in Barry’s Bay. as well as “The Tavern. ” calling it “very. very special.”.

For Fortune, the adaptation also hits the emotional target. She told People that she believes the show honors the kind of relationship a book’s fan base expects from an adaptation. “I think it does exactly what an adaptation of a book that has a fan base should do. which is that it honors the story. ” she said. “It has the heart and soul of the book. It feels like the book.”.

She’s also pointed to what TV can add beyond the pages of her original story: “Because you’re not just in Percy’s head. you get to see Sam and Charlie at different points. You just get so much more access to the world and the characters.” Fortune added that. as a viewer. she genuinely enjoyed watching that expansion unfold: “That was so fun for me to watch. as a viewer. I really just love it.”.
